Gets six touches to Jones' 19
Mason rushed six times for 45 yards and a touchdown and wasn't targeted in Sunday's 19-17 loss to the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Mason didn't get many opportunities as the Vikings played catch-up for most of the game, so superior pass catcher Aaron Jones out-touched Mason 19-6. Mason made the most of his limited chances, breaking free for a 16-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. With Jones operating as the top option in Minnesota's backfield heading into a Week 12 trip to Green Bay, Mason may not get many carries against the stout Packers run defense.
Nov 9, 2025
Works behind Jones
Mason rushed the ball four times for 25 yards in Sunday's 27-19 loss to the Ravens. He added one reception on one target for six yards.
ANALYSIS
Mason has maintained at least an even split with Aaron Jones when both are healthy this campaign, but he matched his season-low in touches Sunday. Jones out-touched Mason 12-5, including both a goal-line opportunity and the majority of targets to the position. Given that Jones was questionable with a shoulder injury heading into the game, the workload split doesn't seem to bode well for Mason going forward.
Nov 2, 2025
Accrues 37 total yards in win
Mason rushed 10 times for 36 yards and brought in his only target for one yard in the Vikings' 27-24 win over the Lions on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mason opened the game splitting work as customary with Aaron Jones, but the latter's exit early in the third quarter due to a shoulder injury afforded more opportunity for the former. Mason still found running room mostly at a premium against a talented Lions run defense, and while Jones' inability to return to the game would seemingly portend a potentially serious injury, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports the veteran back has an AC joint sprain and believes he'll be available for a Week 10 home matchup against the Ravens.
Oct 24, 2025
Five touches in Jones' return
Mason rushed four times for three yards and brought in his only target for three yards in the Vikings' 37-10 loss to the Chargers on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Mason saw Aaron Jones return from a four-game stay on injured reserve for Thursday's contest, and the former finished with a season-low carry total. While that was partly due to Jones' return, game script also played a significant role, as the Vikings were already down 21-3 at the half. Mason appears likely to slide back into a complementary role that should still yield him a serviceable amount of work in games where the Vikings have a chance to run a more balanced attack, with a Week 9 road matchup against the Lions on Sunday, Nov. 2 serving as the next opportunity to see how the backfield shakes out.
Oct 23, 2025
Welcomes back Jones
Mason is welcoming back Aaron Jones (hamstring) to the Vikings backfield for Thursday's game at the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Jones hasn't played since Week 2 due to a hamstring injury, but Minnesota designated him for return from injured reserve Tuesday and then activated him Thursday following two limited walkthroughs. It's unclear how many snaps and touches Mason may yield to Jones in his first game back, but Kevin Seifert of ESPN.com suggests that Jones at least will be utilized in a pass-catching capacity. Mason averaged 16.5 touches for 75.3 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring four rushing TDs during Jones' four-game absence.
Oct 19, 2025
Another TD in Week 7 loss
Mason rushed 15 times for 57 yards and a touchdown and wasn't targeted in the Vikings' 28-22 loss to the Eagles on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mason saw opportunities limited somewhat by game script at certainly points, but the offseason addition put together serviceable performance that he rounded out with his fourth rushing touchdown of the season via a one-yard run late in the third quarter. Mason has topped out at Sunday's rushing yardage total in the last three games following a 116-yard, two-touchdown tally versus the Bengals in Week 3, but he should remain the lead back in a Week 8 road matchup against the Chargers on Thursday night with Aaron Jones (IR, hamstring) still sidelined.
Oct 5, 2025
Garners rush TD in win
Mason rushed 13 times for 52 yards and a touchdown and brought in three of four targets for four yards in the Vikings' 21-17 win over the Browns in London on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Mason's rushing opportunities were limited, but he locked in a solid fantasy day with a three-yard touchdown run to cap off the first drive of the second half. The offseason addition generally found tough sledding on the ground outside of the short score and his game-long 14-yard run, but he continued to keep Minnesota's ground attack viable in the ongoing absence of Aaron Jones (IR, hamstring). Mason should be in line to remain the lead back when the Vikings come out of the Week 6 bye with a Week 7 home matchup against the Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 19.
Sep 28, 2025
Held in check by Pittsburgh
Mason carried the ball 16 times for 57 yards and caught all three of his targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 24-21 loss to the Steelers in Dublin.
ANALYSIS
The former 49ers wasn't able to repeat his Week 3 breakout versus Cincinnati against a tougher front seven, and Mason's longest run against Pittsburgh went for only nine yards. He also saw backup RB Zavier Scott catch a 16-yard TD in the fourth quarter as Minnesota tried to come back from a 21-6 deficit. Things won't get any easier for Mason in Week 5, as he'll take on a Browns defense in London that has already stuffed Derrick Henry and Josh Jacobs this season.
Sep 21, 2025
Excels as lead back in win
Mason rushed 16 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns and wasn't targeted in the Vikings' 48-10 win over the Bengals on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Making his first start in place of Aaron Jones (IR-hamstring), Mason delivered on lofty expectations from fantasy managers with an ultra-efficient performance. The offseason addition consistently rattled off productive gains throughout the afternoon, and he found the end zone from five and four yards out in the second and third quarter, respectively. Mason shared work with Zavier Scott (eight carries) and Cam Akers (five carries), but that was at least partly a byproduct of the Vikings being able to rest starters in the second half. Mason will remain a coveted option in all formats when Minnesota faces off with the Steelers in Dublin, Ireland in Week 4.
Sep 17, 2025
Primed for large workloads
Mason is taking over as Minnesota's unquestioned lead back, with Aaron Jones (hamstring) going to injured reserve and missing at least four games.
ANALYSIS
With No. 3 RB Ty Chandler (knee) already on IR, the Vikings are left with Mason and Zavier Scott as their only running backs on the active roster. The team figures to promote Cam Akers or Xazavian Valladay from the practice squad before Sunday's game against Cincinnati, but that shouldn't stop Mason from taking on a large workload against a vulnerable defense, in a game featuring two backup quarterbacks. It all adds up to a favorable volume projection, with far more upside compared to the past two weeks when Jones played.
Sep 15, 2025
In line for more work
Mason is a candidate for more touches with Aaron Jones (hamstring) potentially being limited or sidelined Sunday versus the Bengals, Alec Lewis of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kevin O'Connell relayed the news regarding Jones on Monday, and the situation should gain clarity once the Vikings are required to post Week 3 injury reports, starting Wednesday. In any case, Mason already had a leg up on Jones through two games this season, handling 24 carries for 98 yards and gathering in three of four targets for 15 yards, while Jones notched 13 carries for 46 yards and three catches (on four targets) for 44 yards and one touchdown. Assuming Jones is out this weekend, most of his touches will be gobbled up by Mason.
Sep 14, 2025
Leads backfield with 11 touches
Mason rushed nine times for 30 yards and caught two of three targets for eight yards in Sunday's 22-6 loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS
Mason was already seeing early-down work before co-starter Aaron Jones (hamstring) was forced out of the contest with an injury. The latter did not return Sunday, and Jones' status going forward is currently unclear. The gradual shift by Minnesota's coaching staff towards the younger, more-explosive Mason early in the season was clear, and the injury to his backfield mate only solidifies that movement. Managers should look past this statistical dud and start Mason with confidence heading into next Sunday's tilt against the Bengals.
Sep 8, 2025
Handles lead rushing role Monday
Mason rushed 15 times for 68 yards and brought in his only target for seven yards in the Vikings' 27-24 win over the Bears on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Mason comfortably led the Vikings in rush attempts and rushing yards, outpacing the only other running back to log a carry, Aaron Jones, by seven carries and 45 yards. The Week 1 usage between the two players is eye-catching to say the least, considering Jones is the established incumbent of the ground attack under a returning coaching staff. Nevertheless, Mason is a proven commodity as an offseason addition, and head coach Kevin O'Connell may be most comfortable affording the latter the bulk of early-down work on most weeks. The next opportunity to see how the pecking order shakes out comes in a Week 2 home matchup against the Falcons on Sunday night.
Aug 9, 2025
Looks good in limited duty
Mason rushed for 20 yards on four carries and failed to catch his only target in Saturday's 20-10 preseason win over the Texans.
ANALYSIS
Getting the start with Aaron Jones held out of the lineup Minnesota's exhibition opener, Mason saw a heavy workload on the team's first drive and then checked out of the contest. Mason was very productive last season with the 49ers in Kyle Shanahan's RB-friendly scheme, but it's not yet clear how big a role he'll have with the Vikings behind Jones, who is coming off a 2024 campaign in which he amassed 1,546 scrimmage yards and played all 17 regular-season games.
Jun 4, 2025
Looks healthy at OTAs
Mason (ankle) participated in on-field drills during OTAs on Tuesday, per the Vikings' official site.
ANALYSIS
Mason appears fully recovered from the high-ankle sprain that forced him to miss the final five regular-season games of his breakout 2024 campaign in San Francisco. The 26-year-old impressed out of the gate last year with Christian McCaffrey unavailable for the 49ers, rushing 134 times for 685 yards (5.1 YPC) and three scores during the team's first eight games, before injuries of his own popped up. Aaron Jones inked a two-year extension with Minnesota this offseason and still projects as the team's starter, but in the interest of keeping the 30-year-old fresh, Mason will be a candidate to push for a significant backfield split. Boasting a far larger frame at 5-foot-11, 223-pounds, Mason also seems the favorite for short-yardage and goal-line work.
Apr 7, 2025
Should get goal-line chances
Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell expects Mason (ankle) to "bring something to the table" in goal-line and short-yardage situations, ESPN.com's Kevin Seifert reports.
ANALYSIS
O'Connell also discussed returning starter Aaron Jones, saying "when [Jones] has... that 1A/1B backfield structure, he can be a total game-changer every time he touches the ball." In other words, O'Connell hopes the 223-pound Mason can be 1B, taking carries between the tackles while Jones gets most of the work in space. The Vikings traded for Mason in mid-March, shortly after San Francisco gave him a second-round restricted free agent tender (and after Minnesota re-signed Jones on a two-year, $20 million contract). Mason missed the final five weeks of his 2024 breakout season with a high-ankle injury, but there hasn't been any report of surgery or a prolonged rehab process this offseason.
Mar 15, 2025
Traded to Minnesota
The 49ers traded Mason (ankle) to the Vikings on Saturday in exchange for a 2026 sixth-round pick and a pick swap, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers placed a second-round tender worth $5.3 million on Mason when free agency began, but he'll now be shipped out for a 2026 sixth-round pick while Minnesota and San Francisco swap the 160th and 183rd picks of the 2025 NFL Draft, per David Lombardi of SFStandard.com. Mason will receive a two-year contract with the Vikings that's worth up to $12 million and includes $7 million guaranteed. Mason served as the 49ers' starting running back for the first half of the 2024 regular season due Christian McCaffrey being sidelined with Achilles injuries. Through the first eight games of the regular season, Mason rushed for 685 yards and three touchdowns on 134 carries while adding 10 catches (on 12 targets) for 86 yards, though he missed the final five games due to a high-ankle sprain. Ty Chandler was slated to be the Vikings' backup running back, but Mason's addition is an upgrade to the backfield led by Aaron Jones, who agreed to a two-year contract with Minneosta on March 9.
Mar 11, 2025
Gets second-round tender
The 49ers are giving Mason (ankle) a second-round restricted free agent tender, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It's a bit surprising to see Mason get a tender for over $5 million after his hot start to 2024 tailed off. The 49ers were in a tough spot, as an original-round tender would've cost about $2 million less but wouldn't have provided any draft compensation if they declined to match an offer sheet from another team (because Mason was undrafted originally). In any case, the 49ers don't necessarily have to keep Mason on the tender; they can use it as a bridge to a multi-year contract or a trade. If he does stay in San Francisco, he'll likely be the No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey, although Isaac Guerendo is capable of pushing for the role. Mason missed the final five weeks of the 2024 season with a high-ankle sprain, but there hasn't been any report of surgery or a prolonged recovery/rehab process.
Mar 6, 2025
Drawing trade interest
Mason (ankle) is drawing trade interest, David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason is set to hit restricted free agency this offseason, so the 49ers have contractual control over the running back for at least one more season. Lombardi believes San Francisco could tender Mason and then entertain trading him. With Christian McCaffrey battling an Achilles issue much of the year, Mason had a breakout 2024 season, rushing 153 times for 789 yards (5.2 YPC) and three touchdowns. He missed the final five games of the season with an ankle injury, and the 49ers have Isaac Guerendo as a younger and cheaper backup option behind McCaffrey.
Dec 7, 2024
Now officially on IR
Mason (ankle) was officially placed on injured reserve Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
It was announced earlier in the week Mason would be placed on injured reserve, but the team waited to officially make that move until the end of the week. Isaac Guerendo will get the first crack at filling in for both Mason and Christian McCaffrey (knee), who was also placed on injured reserve following his Week 13 injury, but pass-catching specialist Patrick Taylor also figures to have some role too. San Francisco plucked a couple of known names to at minimum operate as depth given the myriad of injuries to its running backs, with Israel Abanikanda and practice-squad callup Ke'Shawn Vaughn joining the team earlier this week.
Dec 6, 2024
Out for Week 14, still not on IR
Mason (ankle) has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Bears.
ANALYSIS
In the wake of the 49ers' Week 13 loss at Buffalo, the 49ers lost their top two running backs for the foreseeable future: Christian McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury in his right knee and was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, while Mason was expected to join him on IR due to a high-ankle sprain. The transaction for Mason has yet to be made but likely will happen by Saturday afternoon. With both players out Sunday, Isaac Guerendo is in line to lead San Francisco's backfield, while Patrick Taylor, Israel Abanikanda and practice-squad member Ke'Shawn Vaughn are the candidates to fill in behind him.
Dec 4, 2024
DNP on Wednesday, IR still likely
Mason (ankle) did not practice Wednesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
When he spoke with the media Monday, coach Kyle Shanahan said Mason would be going to injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain. That move has yet to be made, but Shanahan did reiterate Wednesday that a trip to IR is still likely for Mason, via David Lombardi of SFStandard.com. The 49ers will roll with a backfield led by rookie Isaac Guerendo and veteran Patrick Taylor over the next several weeks. The team also signed Ke'Shawn Vaughn to its practice squad.
Dec 2, 2024
To be sent to IR with sprained ankle
The 49ers are slated to place Mason (ankle) on injured reserve, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason suffered a high-ankle sprain late in Sunday night's loss to the Bills. After Christian McCaffrey suffered a PCL injury to his knee in the first half, Mason took on a larger offensive role versus Buffalo, finishing with 13 carries for 78 yards. But he's now going to be sidelined until at least Week 18. The looming moves of CMC and Mason to injured reserve vaults Isaac Guerendo into the 49ers' RB1 spot. Guerendo will be a priority waiver-wire pickup in fantasy leagues this week. Patrick Taylor will likely be promoted from the practice squad this week to serve as the Niners' backup running back over the next month.
Dec 1, 2024
Takes over for injured starter
Mason took 13 carries for 78 yards (no targets) in Sunday's 35-10 loss to Buffalo.
ANALYSIS
Mason saw a spike in carries in Sunday's blowout loss after starter Christian McCaffrey (knee) limped off the field at halftime and did not return. The capable backup looked the part in a run-heavy gameplan dictated by snowy conditions. McCaffrey's status will be clarified as the practice week progresses, but savvy fantasy managers should already be putting claims in for Mason after the work he put in as fill-in starter earlier this year. It is worth mentioning that Mason also left Sunday's contest to be evaluated for a concussion, but he was subsequently cleared and finished without issue, according to 49ers' team reporter Lindsey Lares,
Nov 25, 2024
Receives four touches Sunday
Mason rushed three times for eight yards with one reception (two targets) for five yards in Sunday's 38-10 loss to Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
Mason wound up logging nine snaps on offense (18 percent) in order to earn his four combined touches Sunday. San Francisco's backup has received just six carries in the three games starter Christian McCaffrey has been active for. With such little usage, Mason remains a non-factor in fantasy ahead of next Sunday's tilt at Buffalo.
Nov 18, 2024
Eventful day on special teams
Mason took two carries for 13 yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Mason saw one less snap on offense than he did a week prior for Christian McCaffrey's return to the lineup, but the backup wound up receiving one additional carry against the Seahawks. The 25-year-old Mason also muffed a kickoff return attempt that careened off his chest, but the long-time special teams gunner fixed his own faux pa by diving to swat the ball out of bounds before Seattle could gain possession. In the scope of fantasy football, Mason's current role spelling CMC for a play or two does not carry much value heading into next Sunday's road tilt against Green Bay.
Nov 11, 2024
One carry with CMC back
Mason (shoulder) had one carry for five yards in Sunday's 23-20 win over the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Mason was able to recover from a shoulder injury over San Francisco's bye week in order to suit up against Tampa Bay. Unfortunately for fantasy managers, the first-half star was relegated to his usual backup role with Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) making his 2024 debut off of injured reserve. This resulted in Mason assuming his regular low-usage role Sunday, a trend that should continue now that CMC is back atop the depth chart. Mason can safely be dropped in standard formats as we look towards Week 11.
Nov 8, 2024
Cleared to face Tampa Bay
Mason (shoulder) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game in Tampa Bay, Brianna Dix of the Buccaneers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Coming out of a bye week, Mason was a full practice participant Wednesday and Friday, sandwiched around a limited session Thursday. His time as a prime fantasy asset nonetheless seems to be nearing an end, with coach Kyle Shanahan saying Friday that only an unexpected late setback would prevent RB Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) from playing this Sunday. Mason may still get some snaps and touches but won't dominate carries the way he did for much of the past two months.
Nov 7, 2024
Limited at practice Thursday
Mason (shoulder) was a limited practice participant Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason handled every practice rep Wednesday, but the 49ers typically go through a more rigorous session Thursday, so his downgrade shouldn't be cause for concern. Indeed, he was seen wearing a non-contact jersey in the latter practice, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com, indicating the team still is managing his lingering shoulder issue. Both Mason and Christian McCaffrey (IR, Achilles) were limited Thursday, so the situation bears watching to see if McCaffrey finally makes his season debut Sunday in Tampa Bay, or if Mason continues to be San Francisco's lead runner.
Nov 6, 2024
Full practice Wednesday
Mason (shoulder) practiced in full Wednesday.
ANALYSIS
Mason initially strained his left shoulder Week 6 at Seattle, but he paced the backfield Week 7 against the Chiefs before aggravating the issue Week 8 versus the Cowboys. With a bye week to heal up, he's back to full health, but he's also going to be welcoming Christian McCaffrey (IR, Achilles) to the backfield, perhaps as soon as Sunday's game in Tampa Bay. If that comes to pass, Mason will take a back seat to McCaffrey at running back for the 49ers.
Oct 28, 2024
Aggravated shoulder Sunday night
Speaking Monday, coach Kyle Shanahan said Mason aggravated his existing shoulder injury in Sunday night's win over the Cowboys and is viewed as day to day, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After Sunday night's win, Shanahan said Mason could have returned to the game after he went to the locker room early just before halftime. Mason, however, never played another snap, as Isaac Guerendo handled backfield duties the rest of the way. With Christian McCaffrey (Achilles/calf, IR) expected back after the Week 9 bye, Mason's days as San Francisco's lead back appear to be either over or numbered.
Oct 28, 2024
Could have played through injury
Coach Kyle Shanahan indicated after Sunday's 30-24 win over the Cowboys that Mason (shoulder) could have come back into the game if necessary, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason was deemed questionable to return after a first-half shoulder injury. He was never officially ruled out but watched Isaac Guerendo handle 14 carries for 85 yards and a touchdown. Mason will have some extra recovery time with the 49ers on bye in Week 9 before traveling to Tampa Bay for Week 10.
Oct 27, 2024
Hurts shoulder on SNF
Mason (shoulder) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Mason stayed down after a first-quarter run, checked back into the game but subsequently went to the locker room after rushing six times for 18 yards. He had been playing through an AC joint sprain in his shoulder that he suffered in Week 6 against the Seahawks, so this is presumably an aggravation of that injury. Isaac Guerendo will lead San Francisco's backfield if Mason's unable to return Sunday.
Oct 25, 2024
Cleared to play Sunday
Mason (shoulder) was a full practice participant Friday and doesn't have a designation for Sunday's game against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Mason was nursing an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder coming into last week's game against the Chiefs, but it didn't stop him from handling a season-high snap share (86 percent) while finishing with 14 carries for 58 yards and two receptions for 11 yards in the 28-18 loss. Despite seemingly coming out of that game with no setbacks, the 49ers have still chose to lighten Mason's practice workload this week, as he was a limited participant Wednesday and Thursday before ditching his blue no-contact jersey and logging full reps Friday, per Matt Barrows of The Athletic. Mason thus looks to be in the clear for another turn as the 49ers' lead back in what could be his final start, as head coach Kyle Shanahan previously said that Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) could be ready to return from injured reserve following San Francisco's Week 9 bye.
Oct 24, 2024
Stays limited Thursday
Mason (shoulder) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
For a second session in a row to begin Week 8 prep, Mason is handling a reduced workload due to a lingering shoulder issue, giving him just one more opportunity to get back to full participation Friday ahead of Sunday's contest against the Cowboys. Assuming he's cleared to play this weekend -- either on Friday's injury report or 90 minutes before an 8:20 p.m. ET kickoff -- he'll serve as the 49ers' lead runner for an eighth consecutive game in place of Christian McCaffrey (Achilles), who may return following the team's Week 9 bye.
Oct 23, 2024
Limited by ankle Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Mason will be limited at Wednesday's practice due to an ankle injury, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason previously was tending to an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder that he sustained Thursday, Oct. 10 against the Seahawks, but it didn't stop him from dominating the 49ers backfield this past Sunday versus the Chiefs to the tune of 14 carries for 58 yards and two catches (on two targets) for 11 yards on an 86 percent snap share. Despite having a new health concern this week, Mason's ability to handle some reps to kick off Week 8 prep is a decent sign that his availability for Sunday's game against the Cowboys isn't in peril. Shanahan said Monday that Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) isn't expected to be available until after the 49ers' Week 9 bye, so Mason is lined up to be the team's primary runner for at least one more contest, assuming he's available this weekend.
Oct 20, 2024
Not limited by shoulder injury
Mason rushed 14 times for 58 yards and caught both of his targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 28-18 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Mason suffered a sprained AC joint in the 49ers' win over the Seahawks on Oct. 9, but the extended rest between that contest and Sunday's allowed San Francisco's starting tailback to suit up without restrictions against the Chiefs. The 25-year-old averaged 4,1 yards per carry in the loss, falling victim to a poor game script en route to a modest fantasy line. Quarterback Brock Purdy vultured both of San Francisco's rushing scores Sunday, but Mason operated as the primary back with backup Isaac Guerendo receiving just one carry in the loss. Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) is nearing a return from injury, so make sure to monitor the superstar's status ahead of next Sunday's tilt against the Cowboys, as his return would effectively eliminate Mason's massive fantasy value. For now, we will assume the latter will lead San Francisco's rushing attack against Dallas in Week 8.
Oct 18, 2024
No injury designation
Mason (shoulder) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Chiefs, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason will return to his lead role in the San Francisco backfield after an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder kept him off the field for all but one snap during the second half of last Thursday's win at Seattle. He's been practicing all week, albeit in a a non-contact jersey. That does hint at some risk of complications in-game, but the upside generally outweighs the downside risk when dealing with a player that's provided such strong production. Meanwhile, fellow 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) has yet to resume practicing.
Oct 18, 2024
Still using non-contact jersey
Mason (shoulder) is practicing in a non-contact jersey Friday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
It's about the best fantasy managers could hope for, eight days after Mason suffered an AC joint sprain in last Thursday's 36-24 win over the Seahawks. Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor split playing time with Mason getting just one snap after halftime, and one of the possibilities for the upcoming game against Kansas City is Mason being active but taking fewer touches than usual. Mason was a limited practice participant Wednesday and Thursday and now appears likely to be listed as questionable on the final injury report.
Oct 17, 2024
Another limited showing
Mason (shoulder) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason continues to deal with the AC joint sprain that he suffered in his left shoulder last Thursday in Seattle. Per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com, Mason has been wearing a blue non-contact jersey in practice this week, which resulted in a cap in his reps. Mason thus has only one more opportunity to get back to full participation Friday before the 49ers potentially hand him a designation for Sunday's matchup with the Chiefs. If Mason is at all inhibited or even sidelined this weekend, Isaac Guerendo would be the biggest beneficiary out of San Francisco's backfield, while Patrick Taylor likely would pick up a few touches along the way.
Oct 16, 2024
To be limited Wednesday
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Mason (shoulder) will be limited in practice Wednesday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason attempted to play through a left shoulder injury last Thursday at Seattle, but he departed after his lone carry of the second half and didn't return. Afterward, Shanahan confirmed that Mason had an AC joint sprain and deemed the running back day-to-day. At Monday's unofficial session, Mason was sporting a non-contact jersey, and his capped practice Wednesday likely indicates the same will come to pass. Isaac Guerendo will be the biggest beneficiary Sunday against the Chiefs if Mason cedes any of his typical workload to the rest of the 49ers backfield.
Oct 14, 2024
In non-contact jersey at practice
Mason (shoulder) sported a non-contact jersey during Monday's practice, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle, coach Kyle Shanahan relayed Friday that Mason suffered an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder during this past Thursday's win over the Seahawks, while noting at the time that the running back is considered day-to-day. Look for added context regarding Mason's status to arrive no later than Wednesday's injury report, but his presence at Monday's session suggests that he has a chance to be available Sunday against the Chiefs.
Oct 11, 2024
AC joint sprain confirmed
Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Friday that Mason suffered an AC joint sprain in his left shoulder during Thursday's 36-24 win at Seattle and is considered day-to-day, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason exited in the second quarter Thursday after landing on his left shoulder at the end of a carry and clearly favoring it as he went to the 49ers' sideline. While he was deemed questionable to return, he logged one play after halftime before departing the game for good. The 49ers never gave Mason a designation after that, and he was seen on the sideline wearing his helmet the rest of the second half, but Isaac Guerendo handled most of the RB reps for San Francisco down the stretch. The 49ers don't play again until Sunday, Oct. 20 against the Chiefs, so Mason will have plenty of time to get healthy ahead of that contest.
Oct 11, 2024
Likely has AC sprain
Mason (shoulder) is believed to have a sprained AC joint but will undergo further testing Friday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason left Thursday's win over Seattle in the second quarter, returned for one play after halftime, and then missed the rest of the game. Isaac Guerendo filled in as San Francisco's lead back and iced the game with a 76-yard run in the closing minutes, with Patrick Taylor also taking on some work (five carries, one catch) in Mason's absence. Meanwhile, the 49ers hope to get Christian McCaffrey (Achilles) back at some point within the next few games, although it's not clear if he has any chance to be ready for a Week 7 matchup with the Chiefs on Oct. 20.

More information expected Friday
Coach Kyle Shanahan didn't offer an update on Mason's (shoulder) status following Thursday's 36-24 win over Seattle, Grant Gordon of NFL.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason suffered a shoulder injury on a run midway through the second quarter. He returned for one carry to begin the second half but then was forced back to the sideline due to the pain and did not reenter the contest. Shanahan didn't rule out a significant injury but said the team will have more information Friday.
Oct 10, 2024
Sidelined again
Mason was only able to return for one play in the second half before being sidelined again with a left shoulder injury,Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason was sidelined for a significant portion of the second quarter while having his shoulder evaluated. He returned for one carry to begin the second half but has since been sidelined for two 49ers' possessions. Mason doesn't have an official injury designation and has his helmet on while standing on the sideline, so it is possible he could return to the game again.
Oct 10, 2024
Returns to action
Mason (shoulder) returned to the field to begin the second half of Thursday's game against Seattle, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason was forced to the locker room midway through the second quarter with a shoulder injury. He didn't return to the field before halftime but logged the 49ers' first carry of the second half.
Oct 10, 2024
Suffers shoulder injury
Mason is questionable to return to Thursday's game against the Seahawks due to a shoulder injury, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason walked off the field with trainers after a 14-yard run midway through the second quarter. The severity of the issue isn't clear, but Isaac Guerendo will take over as the 49ers' lead back while Mason is sidelined. After being evaluated in the locker room, Mason was spotted on the sideline with his helmet, per Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com.

Loses first fumble of career
Mason rushed 14 times for 89 yards and caught his lone target of nine yards while coughing up a fumble in Sunday's 24-23 loss to Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Mason's lost a fumble on his last touch in the fourth quarter of Sunday's narrow. The rare folly cost San Francisco dearly in the late loss, but it was also the third-year back's first lost fumble of his career. Mason still produced well on a per-touch basis and remains the unquestioned starter until Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles) returns from injury. A road tilt against the Seahawks on Thursday Night Football is on tap for Mason and the 49ers in Week 6.
Sep 29, 2024
Continues to deliver in fantasy
Mason rattled off 24 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown while adding 37 receiving yards on two receptions (three targets) in Sunday's 30-13 win over New England.
ANALYSIS
Mason continued to dominated the backfield touches in San Francisco sans starter Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles). The only other active running back to receive a carry in Sunday's run-heavy gameplan was rookie Isaac Guerendo, who fumbled that carry away for the 49ers' lone turnover. Mason has provided 20+ carries, 100+ rushing yards with at least one touchdown in three of his four obvious starts in fantasy this season. The Georgia Tech product will make at least two more starts while CMC continues to recover on injured reserve, making Mason a top-tier play against the Cardinals on Sunday.
Sep 22, 2024
Nets 88 yards on 21 touches
Mason rushed 19 times for 77 yards and caught both of his targets for 11 yards in Sunday's 27-24 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Mason failed to extend his touchdown streak to three games in Sunday's loss, but the fill-in starter still managed to provide fantasy managers with solid production despite taking a loss as a team. The 25-year-old has rushed for 324 yards and two touchdowns while filling in for Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles) through three games this season. Mason remains a strong fantasy play heading into Sunday's tilt against the Patriots.
Sep 15, 2024
Drops 20/100/1 line in second start
Mason took 20 carries for 100 yards and a rushing touchdown while bringing in his lone target for four yards in Sunday's 23-17 loss to Minnesota.
ANALYSIS
Mason followed up his impressive Week 1 fantasy performance (28/147/1) with another game of 100-plus rushing yards and his second touchdown of the season. Savvy fantasy managers who snagged Mason when starter Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles) and backup Elijah Mitchell (knee) were ruled out prior to last week's win over the Jets have been rewarded handsomely. What appeared to be a hot short-term add is beginning to look like an league-changing acquisition after the aforementioned CMC was placed on injured reserve prior to Sunday's defeat (Week 7 earliest potential return). Mitchell has been ruled out for the entire year, so Mason is set to occupy the lead role in Kyle Shanahan's vaunted zone-run offense for roughly the first half of the fantasy campaign. It would behoove GMs in all fantasy formats to make sure that the Georgia Tech product is not lingering on your league's waiver wire ahead of Sunday's tilt against the Rams.
Sep 14, 2024
Clear avenue to more carries
Mason's teammate Christian McCaffrey was placed on IR on Saturday due to an Achilles/calf injury.
ANALYSIS
With Elijah Mitchell out for the season, the backfield might now continue to pretty much belong to Mason -- who had a 28-147-1 line in Week 1 -- until at least Oct. 10, the first date that McCaffrey is now eligible to return. Mason is probably long gone in almost every league by now, but all managers should at least take a peek to see if he's somehow still hiding on a waiver wire, Those who drafted him in a deep reserve round or spent some modest FAAB money ahead on him of Week 1 are now looking at a potential GameStop type of ROI on a modest investment.
Sep 13, 2024
In line for more starts
Mason is slated to serve as the 49ers' No. 1 running back Sunday at Minnesota and beyond with the news that Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles) is a candidate for injured reserve, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Kyle Shanahan relayed Friday that San Francisco is considering an IR stint for McCaffrey due to the Achilles tendinitis that is plaguing him at the moment. Shanahan also noted that Thursday's practice was the worst for McCaffrey so far, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com. The 49ers have yet to make a decision on McCaffrey past this weekend, but Mason at the very least will start Sunday on the heels of 29 touches for 152 yards from scrimmage and one rushing TD in the Week 1 win against the Jets. Meanwhile, Deebo Samuel figures to be in the backfield mix as well after handling eight carries Monday night.
Sep 10, 2024
Monster line in spot start
Mason carried the ball 28 times for 147 yards and a touchdown while catching one pass for five yards in Monday's 32-19 win over the Jets.
ANALYSIS
Mason filled in for injured starter Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles) in Monday's season opener and took full advantage of the opportunity with a career night against a talented defensive unit. The Georgia Tech product couldn't replicate CMC's receiving production, but he averaged 5.3 yards per attempt as a rusher while finishing with the highest fantasy score for San Francisco in the team's first win of the regular season. McCaffrey's absence seems to be a precautionary move by the team, so Mason's big fantasy day may be short lived. It wouldn't hurt to make sure the power back is rostered ahead of next week's tilt against Minnesota.
Sep 9, 2024
In line to start on MNF
Mason is slated to be the 49ers' starting running back Monday versus the Jets with Christian McCaffrey (calf/Achilles) inactive for the contest, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason will step in for McCaffrey for at least one game due to the calf/Achilles injury that has plagued the latter since early August. In 33 regular-season games in his two-year career, Mason has averaged 5.6 YPC on 83 rushes, hauled in three of four targets for 31 yards and scored four rushing TDs. Elsewhere in the backfield, Isaac Guerendo and Patrick Taylor are the 49ers' other available options.
Aug 27, 2024
Replacing Mitchell as No. 2 RB
Mason's backfield mate Elijah Mitchell (undisclosed) was placed on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Reports of Mason challenging Mitchell for the second spot on the depth chart actually predate Mitchell's injury troubles this summer, with the Niners apparently impressed by Mason's combination of size (5-foot-11, 223 pounds) and passing-down skills. He's no match for Mitchell in terms of speed, but that may not matter much for fantasy if Mason ever finds himself in the starting lineup under coach Kyle Shanahan. While Christian McCaffrey (calf) seems to be on track for Week 1 against the Jets, there's always considerable injury risk for a running back that piles up snaps and touches the way CMC does. While unlikely to have standalone value while McCaffrey is healthy, Mason is one of the more valuable backup RBs to stash on a fantasy bench -- and he should remain so unless rookie fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo makes a push up the depth chart after missing most of the summer with a hamstring injury.
Aug 24, 2024
Scores in preseason return
Mason (hip) took eight carries for 42 yards and a touchdown in Friday's preseason finale against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Mason returned from a minor hip issue that cost him the 49ers' previous preseason game. The 25-year-old started the contest with Christian McCaffrey (calf) and Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) sitting out with minor injuries. This is the second strong showing from Mason this preseason, as the veteran backup continues to build a case to challenge Mitchell's status at No. 2 on the RB depth chart. This will be McCaffrey's show once the regular season kicks off, but Mason is a name to remember in the event the starter is unable to go at any point this year.
Aug 21, 2024
Returns to practice Wednesday
Mason (hip) is participating in Wednesday's practice, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason missed last Sunday's preseason game against the Saints due to hip soreness, but he's now managed to retake the practice field. Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) also resumed practicing Wednesday, and Isaac Guerendo did so Tuesday, so San Francisco's backfield suddenly looks healthy behind top RB Christian McCaffrey (calf), who remains on track for Week 1.
Aug 18, 2024
Has hip soreness
Coach Kyle Shanahan clarified after Sunday's 16-10 preseason win over the Saints that Mason sat out due to hip soreness Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
The team doesn't sound overly concerned with Mason's injury, as he appears healthier than the team's other top running backs at the moment, but he got the night off Sunday nonetheless. Mason's next chance to take the field will come in Friday's preseason finale against the Raiders.
Aug 18, 2024
Sitting out with minor injury
Mason (undisclosed) won't play in Sunday's preseason game against the Saints, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason is dealing with what is being described as a minor injury. The 49ers are thin at running back with Christian McCaffrey (calf), Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) and Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) all banged up as well, leaving more opportunities for Patrick Taylor, Matt Breida, Cody Shrader and Ke'Shawn Vaughn.
Aug 10, 2024
Star of opening drive Saturday
Mason rushed six times for 34 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's preseason tilt against the Titans.
ANALYSIS
Unquestioned starter Christian McCaffrey (calf) sat out Saturday's preseason opener along with the rest of San Francisco's star players, affording Mason the opportunity to start the team's exhibition opener against Tennessee. The 25-year-old was featured heavily on the 49ers' opening drive and wound up scoring the only first-half touchdown for his club. Mason's strong start to the preseason schedule has the running back in a position to seize the primary backup role behind CMC with Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) and rookie Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) both missing Saturday's contest to injury.
Aug 8, 2024
Working with starters
Mason is getting regular first-team reps while Christian McCaffrey (calf) and Elijah Mitchell (hamstring) recover from injuries, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
The opportunity is particularly interesting because there were reports of Mason challenging Mitchell for the second spot on the depth chart even before Mitchell and McCaffrey suffered their respective injuries. Mitchell's speed and running ability are proven commodities, but Mason may have advantages in terms of pass blocking and receiving skills, and nearly any player has the edge over Mitchell when it comes to durability. Maiocco notes that Mason has "greatly improved" his route-running and hands, making a case to be more involved on offense after taking nearly three-fourths of his snaps on special teams the past two years. That said, the injuries to McCaffrey and Mitchell aren't considered serious, so it's still possible Mason enters Week 1 mostly playing special teams. The San Francisco backfield also has rookie fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo, who has missed all of training camp with a hamstring injury.
Jul 30, 2024
Could push Elijah Mitchell
Mason has made a strong impression on coach Kyle Shanahan this summer and could challenge Elijah Mitchell for the No. 2 RB role, Jordan Elliott of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason initially made the team as an undrafted rookie in 2022 and has since seen action in 33 of 34 regular-season games, logging 181 snaps on offense and 494 on special teams. He's thus far remained behind Mitchell when both have been healthy, but it's possible the Niners would prefer Mason in the backup role due to his advantages in size (5-foot-11, 223 pounds), durability and blocking. Mitchell is much faster but also smaller (5-foot-10, 200 pounds), and he has nearly as many missed games (24) as receptions (28) through three NFL seasons. The addition of rookie fourth-round pick Isaac Guerendo (hamstring) means a trade could even be in play, with Mitchell being the main candidate as he heads into the final season of his rookie contract. Of course, none of them will play much on offense unless Christian McCaffrey misses time with an injury.

Gains 48 yards as RB2
Mason took six carries for 36 yards and caught his only target for 12 yards in Sunday's 21-20 loss to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
MVP hopeful Christian McCaffrey was rested in Week 18, so primary backup Elijah Mitchell started Sunday's tilt against the Rams. Mason wound up logging 27 snaps on offense (44 percent) to Mitchell's 32 (52 percent). While both tailbacks nearly split McCaffrey's playing time Sunday, Mitchell (14-52-1) wound up having more plays executed for him and also nabbed the only touchdown the backfield duo would produce in the loss. Mason wraps up the 2023 campaign (40-206-3) with numbers similar to his rookie year (43/258/1) while also serving as one of the 49ers' top coverage men on special teams.
Jan 3, 2024
Could be busy Sunday
Mason may get a lot of playing time at running back Sunday against the Rams, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason mostly has played special teams this year, sitting behind Christian McCaffrey (calf) and Elijah Mitchell (when healthy) on the depth chart for offense. Week 18 may be another story, as the Niners have locked up the top playoff seed in the NFC and won't have McCaffrey available for their final regular-season game. The calf injury McCaffrey suffered Week 17 might also make the team more cautious with his top backup, Mitchell, who has a lengthy injury history of his own, struggling with knee injuries in particular. It thus won't come as any surprise if Mason and/or Tyrion Davis-Price (practice squads) ends up leading the way this Sunday against the Rams.
Jan 1, 2024
Relegated to third RB
Mason had two carries for three yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 27-10 win over Washington.
ANALYSIS
Mason was relegated to third on San Francisco's RB depth chart following the return of Elijah Mitchell (knee) on Sunday. The latter wound up posting a strong rushing line (17-80-1) against the Commanders in relief of Christian McCaffrey (calf). CMC's injury is currently considered minor, but the MVP candidate could still sit out Week 18 with the 49ers already locking up the No. 1 seed in the NFC. In that scenario Mason would slide into the No. 2 role with Mitchell likely serving as the team's lead back to close out the regular season against the Rams.
Dec 31, 2023
Good to go at Washington
Mason (illness) is active for Sunday's game against the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old was considered questionable due to an illness but has been cleared to suit up for Week 17. Mason should see most of his action on special teams Sunday with Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell entering the game healthy.
Dec 29, 2023
Listed as questionable
Mason (illness) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Commanders.
ANALYSIS
With Elijah Mitchell cleared to return from a knee injury this week, Mason only figures to play special teams unless Sunday's game is a complete blowout. The Niners' third-string back missed practice Thursday and Friday.
Dec 28, 2023
Misses practice due to illness
Mason (illness) did not practice Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason wasn't on San Francisco's injury report for the first day of Week 17 prep, so he appears to have come down with an illness late Wednesday or early Thursday. The second-year running back was limited to special-teams work last Monday against Baltimore after logging nine carries for 40 yards and a touchdown over his previous two games. Elijah Mitchell (knee) is expected to return from a three-game absence Sunday versus the Commanders, so Mason could again see limited -- if any -- work on offense in that contest.
Dec 26, 2023
Limited to special teams
Mason did not see the field on offense Monday, finishing with 12 snaps on special teams in the 33-19 loss to Baltimore.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers were playing catch-up for most of this one-sided affair, which resulted in star tailback Christian McCaffrey playing 100 percent of the offensive snaps in Monday's loss. This left Mason -- who had been operating as the No. 2 in recent weeks -- with zero touches after averaging 3.7 carries and 16.7 rushing yards over San Francisco's last three games. Assuming the NFC's top seed does not get blown out by the 4-11 Commanders on Sunday, Mason should resume his role on offense spelling CMC with a handful of touches on New Year's Eve.
Dec 18, 2023
Logs 13 snaps Sunday
Mason had five rushing attempts for 20 yards and wasn't targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 45-29 win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Mason wound up logging 13 snaps on offense (23 percent) backing up Christian McCaffrey as normal backup Elijah Mitchell (knee) remained sideleined. Mason finished with 20 rushing yards for the second week in a row, but he was unable to punch in a touchdown like he did against Seattle. The 25-year-old should conitnue to see a handful of touches agianst the Ravens next Monday.
Dec 11, 2023
Scores TD spelling CMC
Mason had four carries for 20 yards and a touchdown and a reception of six yards in Sunday's 28-16 win over the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
The special teams ace elevated to No. 2 on San Francisco's running back depth chart after Elijah Mitchell (knee) was unable to suit up against the Seahawks. Mason quickly took advantage of the opportunity when he scored a touchdown on the second play from scrimmage Sunday. His three-yard score came on the heels of an electric 72-yard run from starter Christian McCaffrey, who likely needed a play off to catch his breath after sprinting nearly the length of the field. Mason wound up playing just six snaps on offense (11 percent) and finishing with five combined touches. Even if he is backing up CMC again next Sunday, fantasy managers should not expect more than a handful of touches from the backup against Arizona.
Dec 10, 2023
Should serve as No. 2 back
Mason is in line to serve as the No. 2 running back for Sunday's Week 14 game against the Seahawks with Elijah Mitchell (knee) ruled inactive for the contest.
ANALYSIS
Mason has logged just two carries since Week 6, but he'll be in line to handle any complementary work available behind Christian McCaffrey versus Seattle. Mason has been efficient with his limited opportunities in his second season, averaging 5.5 yards per carry on his 23 totes while also recording a pair of rushing touchdowns and adding a 13-yard reception.
Dec 3, 2023
Active Sunday
Mason (hamstring) is active Sunday against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
The running back was listed as questionable going into the day. Mason is third on the depth chart behind Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell and has not carried the ball since Week 6. The second-year pro does have 21 carries for 117 yards and two touchdowns this season.
Dec 1, 2023
Deemed questionable
Mason (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Sunday's game against the Eagles, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason has been restricted to special teams of late and isn't likely to get any playing time on offense in a crucial NFC showdown unless Christian McCaffrey or Elijah Mitchell suffers an injury. If Mason doesn't end up playing, it'll merely impact the 49ers' special teams units, where he's taken double-digit snaps every week this year.
Nov 29, 2023
Bothered by hamstring
Mason missed Wednesday's practice with a hamstring injury, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason hasn't played on offense since Week 10 but remains a key member of San Francisco's special teams units, where he's logged double-digit snaps every game this season. Elijah Mitchell has been getting whatever crumbs Christian McCaffrey leaves behind in the backfield.
Oct 24, 2023
No offensive snaps Monday
Mason did not see the field on offense while logging 11 snaps on special teams in Monday's 22-17 loss to the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Mason was surprisingly not used on offense even with starter Christian McCaffrey (oblique) playing through a lingering injury suffered in last week's loss to Cleveland. The latter wound up playing 100 percent of San Francisco's offensive snaps Monday, and Elijah Mitchell received the only non-CMC carry for San Francisco's backfield. Mason was coming off of a pair of strong performances with a touchdown in each, so Monday's lack of usage killed any momentum the backup was building heading into next Sunday's tilt against the Bengals.
Oct 15, 2023
Scores TD after McCaffrey's injury
Mason rushed five times for 27 yards and a touchdown but wasn't targeted in Sunday's 19-17 loss to the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Mason took over as San Francisco's lead back after Christian McCaffrey (oblique) exited in the second half. The 24-year-old running back out of Georgia Tech gave the 49ers a 17-13 lead with an eight-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, but Cleveland responded with a pair of field goals to hand the 49ers their first loss of the season. Elijah Mitchell (knee) returned from a two-game absence but had just minus-3 yards on two carries. If McCaffrey is unable to suit up against the Vikings in Week 7, Mason would likely lead San Francisco's backfield over Mitchell.
Oct 9, 2023
Rips off TD in garbage time
Mason rushed 10 times for 69 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 42-10 win over the Cowboys. He failed to bring in his lone target as a receiver.
ANALYSIS
Elijah Mitchell (knee) remained sidelined for the second week in a row, affording Mason the opportunity to continue operating as the team's No. 2 backfield option. The special teams ace wound up playing 13 snaps on offense (18 percent), most of which came in the closing moments of Sunday's lopsided affair. Mason put the final nail in the Cowboys' coffin Sunday when he ripped off a 26-yard run in the fourth quarter for the 49ers' sixth and final touchdown of the contest. The 24-year-old finished as the team's leading rusher, but that had more to do with the crooked score as opposed to his role expanding. Fantasy managers should expect to see a handful of touches from Mason in Week 6 if Mitchell remains sidelined for next Sunday's tilt against Cleveland.
Oct 2, 2023
Fills in as No. 2 option
Mason rushed three times for 10 yards and caught his lone target for 13 yards in Sunday's 35-16 win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
Mason was elevated to No. 2 on the depth chart after Elijah Mitchell (knee) injured his knee during the practice week. The former wound up playing eight snaps on offense (15 percent) in addition to his usual role on special teams. Christian McCaffrey ran for over 100 yards and scored four of the 49ers' five touchdowns Sunday, leaving little work for Mason despite his elevated role in Week 4. The severity of Mitchell's knee injury is currently unknown, but Mason will fill in as the primary backup until his teammate returns to full strength.
Oct 1, 2023
Set for No. 2 role Sunday
Mason is in line to serve as the 49ers' No. 2 running back Sunday against the Cardinals with Elijah Mitchell (knee) listed as questionable but not expected to be active for the contest, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers are also expected to have Tyrion Davis-Price suit up for the first time this season after he was a healthy inactive for the first three games, but he'll likely be ticketed for the No. 3 role while Mason operates as the top backup to lead back Christian McCaffrey. Though McCaffrey should be poised to dominate the snaps and touches while the game is competitive, the 49ers are pegged as two-touchdown favorites by most sportsbooks, meaning that Mason could be in store for plenty of playing time in the event the game turns into a runaway. While both McCaffrey and Mitchell have been available for the first three weeks of the season, Mason's opportunities have been limited almost exclusively to special teams, though he did get three carries late in the 30-12 win over the Giants in Week 3.
Sep 8, 2023
Removed from injury report
Mason (foot) was removed from the injury report and will play in Sunday's opener against the Steelers, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason was limited earlier in the week but has been cleared to play. He's expected to open the season as the Niners' third running back, behind Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell. Mason has minimal fantasy value in season-long leagues.
Sep 7, 2023
Remains limited Thursday
Mason (foot) was a limited participant at the 49ers' practice Thursday, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason is dealing with a sprained foot he suffered in the team's preseason finale Aug. 25 and he has now logged back-to-back limited practices. The running back will look to increase his participation Friday in order to play Sunday in San Francisco's regular season opener against the Steelers on the road.
Sep 6, 2023
Limited Wednesday
Mason (foot) was limited in practice Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason emerged from preseason Week 3 with a sprained foot, but his return to drills Wednesday indicates that he's making progress in his recovery effort. The 49ers backfield is paced by the do-it-all Christian McCaffrey, whose direct backup Elijah Mitchell also will get touches on game days as long as he's healthy. As a result, if Mason isn't ready for Sunday's game in Pittsburgh, Tyrion Davis-Price may be the team's third active running back in that contest.
Aug 31, 2023
Misses practice
Mason (foot) was sidelined for Thursday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason is considered day-to-day with a sprained foot. When healthy, he is currently slated to back up Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell in the 49ers' backfield, while Tyrion Davis-Price should be in the mix as well. His status ahead of Week 1 should become more clear next week when San Francisco releases its initial injury report.
Aug 26, 2023
Has foot sprain
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Saturday that Mason has a sprained foot but is considered day-to-day, Josh Dubow of The Associated Press reports.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers backfield has had its share of injuries during training camp and the preseason, with Elijah Mitchell missing significant time with an adductor strain and Jeremy McNichols dealing with a hamstring issue. Now, one of the competitors for the No. 3 spot behind Christian McCaffrey and Mitchell is tending to a health concern. San Francisco likely will keep four running backs on its final 53-man roster following cut-down day Tuesday, but Mason could be sidelined in the short term with the aim to be healthy by Week 1.
Aug 26, 2023
Loses fumble in loss
Mason took nine carries for 59 yards and one catch for 13 yards in Friday's 23-12 preseason loss to the 49ers, but he lost a fumble at the goal line on the opening drive.
ANALYSIS
With Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell held out, Mason dominated first-team snaps on a night that saw Brock Purdy, Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle all playing. They faced the Chargers' second-team defense and would've scored 14 points in two drives if not for Mason losing a fumble at the goal line. Tyrion Davis-Price then dominated backfield work with the second-stringers en route to 12 touches for 76 yards, perhaps giving the Niners a tougher decision between him and Mason for the No. 3 RB job. Keeping both isn't out of the question.
Aug 13, 2023
Struggles in preseason opener
Mason rushed five times for 17 yards and failed to bring in his only target in Sunday's preseason opener against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Mason struggled to find running lanes mainly due to poor offensive line play, as none of the three San Francisco backs active Sunday sniffed a four-yard carry average. It is worth noting that the undrafted standout from last season didn't get a carry until the 49ers' fifth drive, with Tyrion Davis-Price (9-29-0) starting ahead of him sans Christian McCaffrey (rest) and Elijah Mitchell (hip). With neither back performing well, Mason's spot on the roster is likely still secure. Perhaps the lineup swap will motivate the 24-year-old to shake off the rust against the Broncos on Saturday.

Lining up to be No. 3 back
Mason has been operating as the 49ers' third running back during offseason activities, Jerry McDonald of The Mercury News reports.
ANALYSIS
This shouldn't come as a surprise following Mason's strong contributions on special teams and as a backup in 2022. The then-undrafted rookie surpassed third-rounder Tyrion Davis-Price on the depth chart, and it appears he will maintain that position as the young backs battle for spots behind starter Christian McCaffrey in camp.

Solid rookie showing
Mason finished the 2022 season with 43 carries for 258 yards and a touchdown across 16 games with San Francisco.
ANALYSIS
Mason was a surprise addition to the active roster out of training camp, and he parlayed that opportunity into a special teams role to begin the year. The undrafted rookie was eventually called upon to replace injured backups, and he averaged 6.0 yards per carry in his limited action on offense. Mason is signed through the 2024 season, so he figures to operate as the 49ers' third back to open camp behind Christian McCaffrey and Elijah Mitchell (groin).

Sticks in RB rotation
Mason rushed eight times for 28 yards and was not targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 38-13 win over Arizona.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers welcomed back Elijah Mitchell (knee) from injured reserve, but Mason still received 14 snaps on offense (23 percent). The Georgia Tech product did an admirable job backing up Christian McCaffrey in Mitchell's absence this season, racking up 258 yards on 6.0 yards per carry in limited action over his rookie campaign. Mason will likely see his role limited to special teams in the wild-card round with San Francisco's backfield -- including Deebo Samuel -- back at full strength ahead of Saturday's playoff matchup against Seattle.

Reclaims No. 2 role and scores
Mason (hamstring) rushed two times for 13 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 37-34 win over Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Mason -- who was limited to special teams due to a hamstring injury last week -- resumed his change-of-pace role behind starter Christian McCaffrey, cashing in one of his two carries for the first touchdown of his career. The undrafted rookie saw significantly-fewer touches than he had previously as San Francisco's No. 2 back, but that was likely the result of head coach Kyle Shanahan leaning on McCaffrey in a tight contest. Assuming his hamstring injury is fully healed, Mason could be in line for a larger workload against the Cardinals on Sunday in a matchup the 49ers should be heavily favored in.
Dec 30, 2022
Cleared from injury report
Mason (hamstring) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Raiders, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason suited up with the hamstring injury last week against Washington but only played special teams while Tyrion Davis-Price operated as the No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey. With Mason now off the injury report, a return to the No. 2 role is possible.
Dec 29, 2022
Stays limited Thursday
Mason (hamstring) practiced in a limited fashion Thursday, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason only managed 17 snaps on special teams this past Saturday versus the Commanders after his hamstring tightened up on him last Wednesday. With back-to-back capped sessions behind him this week, he doesn't appear to be in the clear on the health front just yet, but Friday's injury report could be the bearer of good news for undrafted rookie. If Mason is able to retake the No. 2 RB role behind Christian McCaffrey (knee) on Sunday in Las Vegas, the former would push fellow first-year player Tyrion Davis-Price back down the depth chart.
Dec 28, 2022
Officially limited Wednesday
Mason (hamstring) was limited at Wednesday's practice, Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
ANALYSIS
After his hamstring tightened up on him last Wednesday, Mason was limited last Thursday before going down as questionable for Saturday's game against the Commanders. He was active Week 16, but he also was contained to 17 snaps on special teams, as Tyrion Davis-Price handled the RB reps that didn't do to Christian McCaffrey. There's a chance Mason takes over the No. 2 role out of the 49ers backfield Sunday at Las Vegas, but he may have to get back to a full session before the end of Week 17 prep in order to do so.
Dec 27, 2022
Likely to regain No. 2 RB role
49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that Mason is "doing great" in his recovery from a tight hamstring, per David Lombardi of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Mason played in last Saturday's win over Washington but was limited to special teams. Tyrion Davis-Price took over the backup RB role behind Christian McCaffrey in that contest, but Mason is expected to again work behind McCaffrey in Week 17 now that he is showing improvement. Mason had been very effective in his previous three games prior to Saturday, tallying 171 rushing yards on 23 carries.
Dec 25, 2022
Limited to special teams Saturday
Mason (hamstring) was active in Saturday's 37-20 win over the Commanders, but he did not receive a carry and only logged snaps on special teams.
ANALYSIS
Mason's hamstring tightened up during practice this week, but he was ultimately cleared before kickoff. Fellow rookie Tyrion Davis-Price -- who was a healthy scratch for the last two weeks -- took over the backup duties behind Christian McCaffrey and finished with 30 yards on nine carries. Perhaps the decision to limit Mason to special teams was a direct result of him missing practice this week due to injury. The Georgia Tech product was excelling at spelling McCaffrey prior to this unexpected shakeup, so it wouldn't be surprising to see him reclaim that role against the Raiders on Jan. 1.
Dec 24, 2022
Active in Week 16
Mason (hamstring) is listed as active Saturday against the Commanders, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason's hamstring tightened up at Wednesday's practice, which resulted in his early departure from that session and limited on-field work Thursday. He subsequently went down as questionable for Week 16 action, but he again will be available to the 49ers offense as Christian McCaffrey's direct backup. Mason has experienced a regular role over the last five games, racking up 32 carries for 210 yards (6.6 YPC).
Dec 22, 2022
Questionable for Saturday
Mason (hamstring) is listed as questionable for Saturday's contest versus the Commanders, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A late-week addition to the 49ers' injury report, Mason relayed to David Lombardi of The Athletic on Thursday that his hamstring tightened up at Wednesday's practice, which resulted in him being removed from that session and ultimately going down as a limited participant to end Week 16 prep. If Mason isn't 100 percent or out Saturday, Tyrion Davis-Price and/or practice squad member Tevin Coleman would be the main candidates to get work behind the 49ers' No. 1 running back Christian McCaffrey.
Dec 16, 2022
Rips off huge run
Mason rushed four times for 64 yards in Thursday's 21-13 win over the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Mason ripped off a 55-yard run on the 49ers' final drive, stopping one yard short of his first career touchdown so that the team could ice the game. The undrafted rookie actually saw his playing time decrease against Seattle (seven offensive snaps), but he still produced at least 50 rushing yards for the third consecutive week. It is tough to recommend the Georgia Tech product in fantasy when Christian McCaffrey is healthy, but if the latter were to be rested with the NFC West title in hand, then Mason would immediately become a hot asset. For now, expect Mason to serve a similar limited role against Washington next Saturday.
Dec 11, 2022
Strong in backup role
Mason rushed 11 times for 56 yards and was not targeted in Sunday's 35-7 win over the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Mason followed up last week's career high in rushing with another new high-water mark on 11 carries. The undrafted rookie absorbed nearly all of Elijah Mitchell's (knee) carries over the last two weeks, providing some low-end fantasy value for those in deeper formats. Mason is still the clear No. 2 behind workhorse Christian McCaffrey, who went for 153 combined yards and two touchdowns Sunday. Expect the Georgia Tech product to see a similar workload in a soft matchup against the Seahawks on Thursday.
Dec 4, 2022
Career game Sunday
Mason rushed eight times for 51 yards in Sunday's 33-17 win over the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Mason took on a larger offensive role sans Elijah Mitchell (knee) as expected, setting new career marks in carries and rushing yards. The Georgia Tech product looked sharp in limited action, putting his downhill running style on display. Christian McCaffrey still dominated the workload, producing 146 yards and a touchdown on 25 combined touches. CMC has a poor injury history and entered Sunday's contest with a balky knee, so Mason is worth stashing for fantasy managers with the luxury to do so. In his current role, the rookie tailback will find it hard to crack fantasy lineups against the Buccaneers on Sunday.
Nov 27, 2022
Could takeover backup role
Mason rushed five times for 25 yards in Sunday's 13-0 win over the Saints.
ANALYSIS
Mason was used on the final drive of the game with the 49ers up multiple scores for the second week in a row. Unlike last week's garbage time appearance against the Cardinals, the undrafted rookie was actually needed after Elijah Mitchell (knee) went down late in this contest. Christian McCaffrey was dealing with knee soreness as well, but the former's is expected to be more serious. It sounds like Mitchell will be forced to miss some time again, and CMC doesn't have the build to handle a 20-plus touch workload, so Mason could step into a prominent backup role in head coach Kyle Shanahan's run-heavy offensive scheme. If that were to be the case, the Georgia Tech product should absorb a chunk of Mitchell's carries ahead of Sunday's showdown against the Dolphins.
Nov 22, 2022
Gets four carries in garbage time
Mason rushed four times for 14 yards in Sunday's 38-10 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Mason was able to finally get some offensive run in garbage time after serving exclusively on special teams this season. The carries and yardage both represented new highs for the undrafted rookie. Mason will resume seeing the majority of his snaps on special teams when the 49ers take on the Saints on Sunday.
Nov 14, 2022
Serves special teams role
Mason logged 19 snaps on special teams and was not used on offense in Sunday's 22-16 win over the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Mason returned to action after being deployed as a healthy scratch last game, effectively swapping spots on the depth chart with Tyrion Davis-Price (inactive). The 49ers welcomed back Elijah Mitchell (knee) to backup Christian McCaffrey this week, so the rookie wasn't asked to do more than serve on special teams. Mason carries no fantasy value heading into a Week 11 tilt against the Cardinals next Monday.
Oct 23, 2022
Healthy scratch
Mason (coach's decision) is inactive Sunday against the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Mason will sit for the first time this season after the team's acquisition of Christian McCaffrey. The undrafted rookie will likely need an injury to find himself on the active roster moving forward.
Oct 10, 2022
Usurped by veteran backup
Mason logged 15 snaps on special teams and did not receive a touch in Sunday's 37-15 win over the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
The 49ers signed an old friend, Tevin Coleman, to backup Jeff Wilson for the past two weeks, effectively pushing Mason further down the depth chart. It is still unclear what the team's plan for the undrafted rookie is, as they promoted him to the active roster over players with higher pedigree and more experience, only to give him one carry through five active games. Even with San Francisco's backfield decimated by injury, Mason remains a non-factor in his current role on special teams.
Oct 5, 2022
Not part of offense in win
Mason failed to record a single rushing attempt in Monday's 24-9 win over the Rams.
ANALYSIS
Mason did not play any offensive snaps Monday. Instead, the rookie running back saw the field for 17 snaps on special teams. Meanwhile, starter Jeff Wilson handled almost all of the team's work out of the backfield with 33 offensive snaps, ceding one carry to fellow veteran Tevin Coleman. It appeared Mason would have the opportunity to see increased involvement in the running game after injuries to both Elijah Mitchell (knee) and Tyrion Davis-Price (ankle), but that just hasn't come to fruition. The 23-year-old will look to make the most of any opportunities he may earn when the 49ers visit the Panthers in Week 5.
Sep 26, 2022
Gets one carry as backup
Mason received one carry for seven yards in Sunday's 11-10 loss to Denver.
ANALYSIS
Mason served as the primary backup to starter Jeff Wilson (12 carries for 75 yards) with rookie Tyrion Davis-Price (ankle) set to miss several weeks of action. The undrafted rookie only saw five snaps on offense (nine percent) compared to Wilson's 41 snaps, which shows the lack of trust head coach Kyle Shanahan has in Mason as an offensive option. Veteran Marlon Mack -- who was promoted from the practice squad prior Sunday's contest -- only saw three snaps on special teams. Mason shouldn't be considered a fantasy option heading into a matchup with the Rams next Monday.

Injury opens up No. 2 job
Mason will take over the No. 2 spot on the 49ers' running back depth chart following the news that Tyrion Davis-Price (ankle) will miss several weeks, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Davis-Price -- who appeared to beat the undrafted Mason for the No. 2 job in practice last week -- suffered the injury late in Sunday's 27-7 win over Seattle. Mason served as the third active back and did not receive a touch (eight snaps on special teams), so it is hard to get excited about the undrafted rookie's new elevated role. Chan also added that practice squad veteran, Marlon Mack, is a candidate to be elevated to the active roster, so he could leapfrog the less-experienced Mason. However the backup spots shake out, Jeff Wilson (20 touches for 103 yards) was the clear lead back in Sunday's win, making him the desired fantasy target for running back stats in San Francisco heading into a matchup against the Broncos on Sunday Night Football.
Sep 12, 2022
Will compete for No. 2 job
Mason will compete with Tyrion Davis-Price during team practices this week to see who will serve as Jeff Wilson's backup following the announcement that Elijah Mitchell (knee) will miss a minimum of eight weeks,
ANALYSIS
Barrows added that the two rookies had already been competing in camp, and that is why Davis-Price was a healthy scratch and Mason served as the third active back in Week 1. With the veteran Wilson announced as the starter, he becomes the priority add for those in need of running back help. Traditionally, head coach Kyle Shanahan prefers to use a two-back approach to his run-heavy schemes, so whoever wins this marginally-important job battle could generate some fantasy value over the course of the season.
Sep 12, 2022
Five snaps Sunday
Mason played five snaps on special teams and did not receive a touch in Sunday's 19-10 loss to the Bears.
ANALYSIS
Mason -- an undrafted rookie -- leapfrogged rookie third-round pick, Tyrion Davis-Price (healthy scratch), on the depth chart seemingly moments prior to kickoff, earning the first active game of his NFL career. Despite his unheralded rise up the running back pecking order in San Francisco, head coach Kyle Shanahan failed to trust the rookie on the field, despite starter Elijah Mitchell (knee) going down early and playing just 17 snaps. Veteran back Jeff Wilson (nine carries for 22 yards) got the remaining 40 snaps at running back, and the combination of wide receiver Deebo Samuel (eight carries for 52 yards and a touchdown) and quarterback Trey Lance (13 carries for 54 yards) made up the remainder of a sorry performance from the 49ers offense. Traditional coaching and fantasy football logic would make Jeff Wilson the hot add on waivers for as long as Mitchell is out, with Mason being the "upside pick," but it is hard to predict what will unfold when San Francisco's front office and coaching staff appear to be

Makes 53-man roster
Mason survived the final wave of roster cuts Tuesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
ANALYSIS
Mason will become the fifth running back the 49ers will carry into the regular season. The undrafted rookie out of Georgia Tech earned his spot by leading the 49ers in rushing this preseason (94 yards and 4.9 yards per carry). Mason won't get much run early in the season due to the depth San Francisco carries at the position. That said, Elijah Mitchell (knee) -- who is expected to be ready by Week 1 -- comes into the year banged up, and there is no guarantee that either Trey Sermon or Tyrion Davis-Price will hold their spots above Mason on the depth chart should either struggle out of the gates in their complementary roles behind Mitchell and veteran Jeff Wilson.

Inks deal with San Fran
The 49ers signed Mason as an undrafted free agent Monday.
ANALYSIS
Mason ran 280 times for 1,558 yards and 14 touchdowns during his first two seasons at Georgia Tech, but he failed to replicate that type of production in his final two campaigns. The 49ers are returning their top four backs from a year ago and drafted Ty Davis-Price in the third round, so Mason will likely have an uphill battle to make the roster.
