Leading rusher on five carries
Carter rushed five times for 28 yards while adding three receptions for 30 yards in Sunday's 27-24 overtime loss to the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Carter finished Sunday's narrow loss as Arizona's leading rusher despite seeing five fewer carries than fill-in starter Bam Knight (10-12-1). The latter cashed in a short rushing score, making Knight the preferred fantasy option when also factoring in his starting role. Trey Benson (knee) and/or Emari Demercado (ankle) could return in Week 13, although nothing has been confirmed on either front, which would push Carter and Knight into smaller roles on offense. For now, Carter is nothing more than a desperate play for those in deeper formats against the Buccaneers next Sunday.
Nov 17, 2025
Role increases Sunday
Carter had two carries for six yards and gathered in five of seven targets for 22 yards during Sunday's 41-22 loss to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
Carter's 44 percent snap share marked his highest since Week 7, which can be attributed to Emari Demercado's early exit due to an ankle injury. Carter ended up playing one more offensive snap (33-32) than starting RB Bam Knight, who led the backfield with nine touches for 45 yards from scrimmage and one rushing TD. The extent of Demercado's health concern is unclear, but if he misses any time and Trey Benson (knee) isn't activated from injured reserve this week, Carter would stand to split the backfield with Knight for at least this coming Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
Nov 8, 2025
Joins active roster
The Cardinals signed Carter from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Arizona used up its third and final elevation for Carter this past Monday at Dallas, only for him to log no snaps on offense or special teams despite being active. Emari Demercado (15 touches, 40 percent snap share) and Bam Knight (11 touches, 57 percent snap share) ended up splitting the backfield reps, and with Trey Benson (knee) still on injured reserve, such a breakdown likely will continue Sunday at Seattle. As a result, Carter currently doesn't hold much sway in terms of fantasy.

Reverts to practice squad
Carter reverted to the Cardinals' practice squad Tuesday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Despite being elevated from the practice squad ahead of Monday's game against the Cowboys, Carter did not play a single snap as Bam Knight and Emari Demercado served as the Cardinals' two running backs during the 27-17 victory. It was Carter's third elevation to the active roster, which means he would have to be signed to the 53-man roster in order for play for the Cardinals for the rest of the season. However, there may not be much motivation for Arizona to add Carter to the active roster if Trey Benson (knee) is close to returning from injured reserve.
Nov 4, 2025
Goes unused Monday night
Carter was active but didn't play a snap in Monday's 27-17 win over the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
Carter was elevated from the practice squad in advance of Monday's contest to bolster the team's backfield depth, but the Cardinals ended up leaning on Bam Knight (38 snaps, 11 touches) and Emari Demercado (27 snaps, 15 touches) exclusively as their running backs during the game. Carter will revert to the Cardinals' practice squad Tuesday, and because he's now been elevated the maximum three times this season, he would need to be signed back to the 53-man roster in order to be eligible to play again. Trey Benson (knee) could be nearing a return from injured reserve in the coming weeks, so Arizona may not have much motivation to add Carter back to the roster. Over four appearances on the season, Carter has carried 35 times for just 97 yards (2.8 average) and one touchdown to go with nine catches for 77 yards on 12 targets.
Nov 3, 2025
Promoted for Monday's game
The Cardinals elevated Carter from their practice squad ahead of Monday's game against the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
After cutting Carter earlier this week in a procedural move, Arizona re-signed the running back to its practice squad shortly thereafter. As expected, he'll wind up being elevated for the third and final time this season, so Carter will need to be signed back to Arizona's 53-man roster in order to be eligible to play in any additional games beyond Monday. According to Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site, head coach Jonathan Gannon said Saturday that Bam Knight will draw the start out of the Arizona backfield in Dallas, but the team plans on taking a hot-hand approach to the position among Knight, Carter and Emari Demercado as the game unfolds. Given the uncertainty of what kind of workload he'll receive, Carter doesn't profile as an inspiring fantasy option this week, even in a favorable matchup versus a weak Dallas defense.
Nov 1, 2025
May be elevated Monday
Carter is an option to be elevated from the practice squad ahead of Monday's game at Dallas, but coach Jonathan Gannon announced Saturday that Bam Knight will be the starting running back, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Cardinals have had a revolving door in the backfield this season due to a series of injuries, namely to James Conner (foot, out for the season) and Trey Benson (knee, currently on IR). Emari Demercado (ankle) is set to play for the first time since Week 6, but he's the only other RB on the active roster ahead of Week 9 action. Carter is the obvious name to be elevated Monday afternoon, but even if he suits up and mixes in with Knight and Demercado, his returns (2.8 yards per carry) this season have left much to be desired.
Oct 31, 2025
Taking first RB reps this week
Carter, who currently is on the Cardinals' practice squad, took the initial running back reps in practice Thursday and Friday, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Following Arizona's Week 8 bye, the team released Carter on Monday and then re-signed him to the practice squad one day later. The Cardinals still have two elevations to use on Carter this season, so the transactions seemingly were procedural to open up a spot on the active roster for one of the players currently on a reserve list. Elsewhere in the backfield, Emari Demercado (ankle) returned to practice this week in a limited capacity, indicating that he's closing in on his first game action since Week 6. The order of RBs in practice has been Carter, Demercado and then Bam Knight, so the team may be preparing to run with the backfield of Carter on early downs and Demercado in obvious passing situations Monday in Dallas, assuming the latter is able to suit up.
Oct 28, 2025
Returns to Arizona's practice squad
Arizona re-signed Carter to its practice squad Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Following a Week 8 bye, the Cardinals released Carter from the 53-man roster on Monday, but the fifth-year running back will end up sticking around in the organization. At the moment, Arizona has only two running backs on its roster -- Bam Knight and Emari Demercado (ankle), the latter of whom sat out the Week 7 loss to the Packers -- so Carter seemingly has a good chance of being elevated from the practice squad to add depth to the backfield ahead of Monday's game in Dallas. Knight still projects to serve as Arizona's lead option on the ground in Week 9, though Carter will likely have a role in the game plan if he's elevated.
Oct 28, 2025
Back with Arizona
Coach Jonathan Gannon said Carter will take part in Tuesday's practice, indicating that the Cardinals at least have re-signed him to the practice squad, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
On the heels of a Week 8 bye, Arizona released Carter on Monday, which likely was a procedural move in order to open up a spot on the active roster due to the imminent activation from the reserve/PUP list of rookie first-round pick Walter Nolen (calf). Carter has been serving as the No. 2 RB behind Bam Knight in the team's last two games with James Conner (foot) out for the season and Trey Benson (knee) on IR. During that two-game stretch, Carter combined for 100 yards from scrimmage on 20 touches.
Oct 27, 2025
Expected back with Arizona
The Cardinals intend to re-sign Carter in the near future, Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter was released earlier Monday, but it sounds as if it was some sort of procedural move by Arizona, and the veteran running back appears to be sticking around. Carter's playing time has dipped in consecutive games, and he rushed just seven times for 11 scoreless yards in Arizona's pre-bye loss to the Colts in Week 7. Carter holds very little fantasy value, as Bam Knight has passed him on the depth chart.
Oct 27, 2025
Released by Cardinals
The Cardinals have released Carter, Bo Brack of GoPHNX.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Trey Benson (knee) not eligible to return from IR until Week 10, Bam Knight is currently the Cardinals' top healthy RB, though it's possible Emari Demercado (ankle) -- who was inactive in Week 7 -- could return to action next Monday against the Cowboys. Additionally, D'Ernest Johnson and Jermar Jefferson represent possible Week 9 practice squad elevations.
Oct 20, 2025
Logs nine touches Sunday
Carter turned seven carries into 11 yards and caught both of his targets for 25 yards during Sunday's 27-23 loss to the Packers.
ANALYSIS
For the second week in a row, Bam Knight had a slight lead on Carter in terms of offensive snaps (34-28), and the former also was far more effective with his reps, notching 57 yards on 14 rushes while hauling in three of four targets for seven yards. With fellow RB Emari Demercado (ankle) inactive, even practice-squad elevation D'Ernest Johnson got in the mix, seeing 14 snaps and taking one carry of no yards. Such a breakdown of work between Knight and Carter will continue for as long as Trey Benson (knee) is sidelined, which is expected to last beyond the Cardinals' Week 8 bye for at least one more game.
Oct 12, 2025
Solid in complementary role Sunday
Carter rushed nine times for 34 yards and brought in two of five targets for 30 yards in the Cardinals' 31-27 loss to the Colts on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Prior to the game, it was announced the Bam Knight would serve in the lead-back role, theoretically relegating Carter to complementary duties. However, Carter ended up lagging just two carries behind Knight while equaling his teammate's rushing yardage, and he provided a nice chunk play as a receiver with a 16-yard catch. Although Knight did score a short rushing touchdown, the gap between the two players doesn't seem to be much heading into a Week 7 home matchup against the Packers next Sunday afternoon.
Oct 12, 2025
Expected to lose touches to Knight
Bam Knight is expected to take on a bigger workload out of the Cardinals backfield alongside Carter and Emari Demercado in Sunday's game against the Colts, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Per Schefter, in a game that QB Jacoby Brissett is expected to start in place of Kyler Murray (foot), Knight -- who logged five touches in last week's 22-21 loss to the Titans -- is expected to see an expanded role, with Schefter suggesting that Knight is on track to work ahead of Carter, who had 23 touches versus Tennessee. With that context in mind, and with Demercado (three carries Week 5) also in the mix, Carter profiles as a hit-or-miss fantasy lineup option Sunday.
Oct 10, 2025
Set to maintain lead role
Carter has consistently been the first running back in Arizona's rotation in practice, suggesting he will maintain the lead role Sunday against the Colts, Theo Mackie of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter turned 23 touches into 73 scrimmage yards and a touchdown in the Cardinals' Week 5 loss to the Titans. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said Emari Demercado won't be punished for his costly goal-line fumble, so Demercado will likely continue to mix in for passing situations, while Bam Knight is on hand as the third-string backfield option while James Conner (foot) and Trey Benson (knee) are on injured reserve. Conner's out for the season, while Benson won't be back any earlier than Week 10 against the Seahawks.
Oct 6, 2025
Dominates opportunity
Carter rushed the ball 18 times for 51 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 22-21 loss to the Titans. He added five receptions on five targets for 22 yards.
ANALYSIS
Carter was expected to step into an expanded role with both James Conner (foot) and Trey Benson (knee) sidelined, though it was unclear exactly how touches would be distributed. Carter resoundingly served as the lead back for Arizona, accounting for 23 total touches, while Emari Demercado and Bam Knight combined for nine. He wasn't particularly efficient with the touches, though he did manage to find the end zone on a one-yard plunge early in the first quarter. Carter's involvement as a receiver was also particularly notable, as Demercado was projected to take over duties as the primary pass catcher out of the backfield. Carter looks to have reliable volume heading into a Week 6 matchup against the Colts, though this situation could remain fluid.
Oct 5, 2025
Set for early down role
The Cardinals are expected to "lean on" Carter on first and second downs during Sunday's game against the Titans after Trey Benson (knee) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Just over a quarter of the way into the season, Arizona is already down its top two running backs. James Conner suffered a foot injury Week 3 that required season-ending surgery, while Benson is appears set to miss at least 4-to-6 weeks after undergoing meniscus surgery earlier this week. Emari Demercado had opened the season as Arizona's No. 3 running back behind those two players, but rather than elevating Demercado to the lead back role, Schefter relays that the Cardinals instead plan to keep him in his usual passing-down/change-of-pace role. Carter, who had previously been elevated from the practice squad for Week 4 before being signed to the 53-man roster Monday, thus looks poised to see the brunt of the early-down work and represents the best bet to lead the Arizona backfield in carries Sunday. Even so, Carter could still struggle to see enough overall touches to make for a comfortable option in fantasy lineups. In addition to losing out on some third-down snaps to Demercado, Carter could also cede some
Oct 1, 2025
Positioned for significant role
Carter is positioned alongside Emari Demercado as one of Arizona's top backfield options with Trey Benson (knee) on IR and recovering from arthroscopic surgery, Darren Urban of the Cardinals' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter, who was signed to the active roster from the practice squad Monday, now faces a significant backfield opportunity with Adam Schefter of ESPN reporting that Benson will miss 4-to-6 weeks, and James Conner (foot) already out for the year. Head coach Jonathan Gannon said "we'll see how the week goes" when asked whether Carter or Demercado will start Sunday's matchup against the Titans, suggesting that reps remains up for grabs. Carter appeared in three regular-season games with the Cardinals in 2024, in which span he logged 35 carries for 131 yards (3.7 YPC) and one score, while securing all 11 of his targets for 57 yards. In theory, Carter projects more for early-down work while Demercado is more suited to a pass-catching role, but if either tailback demonstrates a hot hand they could secure the No. 1 gig until Benson returns.
Sep 29, 2025
Signs to active roster
The Cardinals signed Carter off their practice squad Monday.
ANALYSIS
With James Conner (foot) expected to miss the remainder of the year, Carter's signing adds much needed backfield depth. The North Carolina product was elevated for the Week 4 loss to the Seahawks, rushing once for one yard over just four offensive snaps. He's expected to continue playing behind both Trey Benson and Emari Demercado in the Arizona's Week 5 matchup against the Titans.
Sep 26, 2025
Moves back to practice squad
Carter reverted to the Cardinals' practice squad Friday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Carter was elevated from the practice squad for the first time this season in the wake of James Conner's season-ending foot injury. However, Carter logged just four snaps on offense and one play on special teams during Thursday's 23-20 loss to the Seahawks, and his only carry for one yard on third down in the middle of the second quarter was followed by a Blake Gillikin punt. Trey Benson (37 of 67 offensive snaps) and Emari Demercado (26) handled the bulk of the backfield reps, with the former turning 13 touches into 54 yards from scrimmage and the latter recording 21 total yards and a receiving TD on his four touches. While Carter can be elevated two more times, he doesn't appear to be an immediate candidate to contribute to the Cardinals' running game.
Sep 25, 2025
Jumps to active roster
The Cardinals elevated Carter from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Thursday's game against the Seahawks.
ANALYSIS
Carter didn't make Arizona's 53-man roster out of training camp but found himself back on the practice squad, where he spent the first three games of the campaign. With James Conner (foot) on injured reserve and out for the season, Carter will join Emari Demercado and Bam Knight as backfield options behind new No. 1 RB Trey Benson. When both Conner and Benson were banged-up Weeks 17 and 18 of last season, Carter racked up 30 carries for 113 yards and one touchdown and gathered in all six targets for 27 yards.
Aug 28, 2025
Signed to Cards' practice squad
The Cardinals signed Carter to the practice squad Thursday, Zach Gershman of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter was unable to crack the Cardinals' 53-man roster Tuesday, but the 2021 fourth-rounder will stay in Arizona as a member of the team's practice squad. He spent most of 2024 on the Cardinals' practice squad but played in the last three games of the regular season, logging 35 carries for 131 yards and a touchdown along with 11 catches (on as many targets) for 57 yards.
Aug 26, 2025
Gets cut by Cardinals
The Cardinals released Carter on Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
In nine games with the Cardinals over the last two seasons, both of which he worked with offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, Carter turned 57 carries into 280 yards (4.9 YPC) and one touchdown and 20 catches (on 22 targets) into 90 yards and another TD. While those numbers are respectable, he and fellow RB DeeJay Dallas didn't make the cut after the preseason, while Emari Demercado and Zonovan Knight did behind the top duo of James Conner and Trey Benson. Carter can sign with any team but may end up back on Arizona's practice squad, where he spent most of the 2024 campaign.
Aug 24, 2025
Efficient on ground in loss
Carter rushed five times for 47 yards and brought in one of three targets for minus-6 yards in the Cardinals' 20-10 preseason win over the Raiders on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
Carter gained 38 yards on one carry, but his performance was still a marked improvement over the 10 yards he netted on eight carries last Saturday night in the second preseason game against the Broncos. The veteran back is battling fellow veterans like DeeJay Dallas and Emari Demercado for a spot in the latter portion of the Cardinals' depth chart, and it remains to be seen if he's done enough to get past cutdown day after doing little on the ground over the first two preseason contests.
Aug 17, 2025
Heavy workload in preseason loss
Carter rushed eight times for 10 yards and brought in all five targets for 19 yards in the Cardinals' 27-7 preseason loss to the Broncos on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
Carter was the first running back in the game for Arizona and logged the first touch from scrimmage, gaining three yards. The veteran back also made his usual impact as a receiver, but although he saw a heavy workload over the last two games of the 2024 regular season due to injuries in the Cardinals' running game, Carter is seemingly facing an uphill battle to hold on to a roster spot this summer. Trey Benson, a 2024 third-round pick, is expected to have a much bigger role in his second campaign, while Emari Demercado is a more explosive runner that can also serve as an effective pass-catching option out of the backfield.
Jan 6, 2025
Earns 21 touches in season finale
Carter racked up 17 carries for 43 yards and one touchdown and hauled in all four targets for 16 yards during Sunday's 47-24 victory versus the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
With James Conner (knee) and Trey Benson (ankle) on injured reserve, Carter was tasked with leading the Cardinals backfield Week 18, as he started and dominated touches among his position mates. With 21 touches overall, he easily outproduced DeeJay Dallas (two touches for 27 total yards) and Tony Jones (four carries for 55 yards and one TD), and Carter salvaged a poor per-touch performance with a four-yard score early in the fourth quarter. Carter ends the 2024 campaign with 35 rushes for 131 yards (3.7 YPC) and one TD to go with 11 catches (on 11 targets) for 57 yards in three appearances, all of which occurred Weeks 16-18 with Conner and Benson either banged-up or sidelined.
Jan 1, 2025
Jumps to active roster
The Cardinals signed Carter off the practice squad to the active roster Wednesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Arizona placed its top two running backs James Conner (knee) and Trey Benson (ankle) on injured reserve over the last two days, necessitating at least one promotion to the active roster. Carter has received run the past two games, racking up 25 touches for 129 yards from scrimmage and no TDs. There's a good chance he serves as the team's No. 1 RB on Sunday against the 49ers, while DeeJay Dallas handles change-of-pace work out of the bacfield.
Dec 30, 2024
Shifts back to practice squad
Carter reverted to the Cardinals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction report.
ANALYSIS
Carter was the beneficiary of No. 1 RB James Conner lasting just 12 offensive snaps before seemingly aggravating a knee injury that capped his practice reps during Week 17 prep. The former stepped in for Conner and parlayed 57 (of 79) snaps into 15 touches for 81 yards from scrimmage, including 70 yards on the ground (a 5.4 average). Meanwhile, fellow reserve back DeeJay Dallas (11 snaps) had just one catch and no carries for a second straight contest. With the status of both Conner and rookie third-rounder Trey Benson (inactive the last two games due to an ankle injury) up in the air for a Week 18 matchup with the 49ers, Carter could be Arizona's lead runner in the regular-season finale.
Dec 28, 2024
Steps up in Conner's absence
Carter rushed 13 times for 70 yards and brought in both targets for 11 yards in the Cardinals' 13-9 loss to the Rams on Saturday night.
ANALYSIS
The journeyman back unexpectedly was handed the reins of the Cardinals' ground attack after James Conner exited the game in the first half with a knee injury. With Trey Benson (ankle) inactive, Carter took over as the lead back and consistently put together productive runs while compiling his highest rushing yardage total since Week 9 of the 2022 season. If the Cardinals opt to shut Conner down for the regular-season finale against the 49ers, Carter should have a solid complementary role, at minimum, in that game assuming Benson is also active.
Dec 28, 2024
Back on active roster
The Cardinals elevated Carter from the practice squad ahead of Saturday's game at the Rams, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Arizona listed its top two running backs James Conner (knee) and Trey Benson (ankle) as questionable for Week 17 action, and while the former at the very least is expected to play Saturday, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Carter will serve as insurance in the event either player is limited or inactive. Last Sunday at Carolina, Carter earned 25 (of 70) offensive snaps, which he parlayed into 10 touches for 48 yards from scrimmage, and position mate DeeJay Dallas had a one-yard TD catch while notching 18 plays.
Dec 23, 2024
Moves back to practice squad
Carter reverted to the Cardinals' practice squad Monday, per the NFL's transaction log.
ANALYSIS
Carter made his season debut Sunday in Carolina and ended the contest as Arizona's lead runner after James Conner suffered a knee injury. Overall, Carter played 25 of 70 offensive snaps in the overtime loss, recording five carries for 18 yards and a team-high five catches (on five targets) for 30 yards. DeeJay Dallas also got in the act with a one-yard TD reception on 16 plays. There hasn't been a definitive update on Conner's health, but with Emari Demercado (back) on injured reserve and Trey Benson (ankle) out Week 16, Carter could be a regular out of the Cardinals backfield this coming Sunday at the Rams.
Dec 21, 2024
Up from practice squad
The Cardinals elevated Carter from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday.
ANALYSIS
With Emari Demercado (back) on injured reserve, Trey Benson (ankle) ruled out for Week 16 action and DeeJay Dallas (illness) listed as questionable, there's a chance Carter will serve as the direct backup to James Conner on Sunday at Carolina. Dallas likely will need to be inactive for Carter to get much, if any, run, but he's poised for his first game action of the campaign. In 45 career contests between the Jets and Cardinals, Carter has averaged 4.2 yards on his 291 carries, hauled in 101 of 140 targets for 714 yards and scored eight total touchdowns.
Aug 29, 2024
Lands opportunity
Carter signed with the Cardinals' practice squad Wednesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter joined Arizona last November after he was waived by the Jets and appeared in their last six regular-season games. A fourth-round selection in 2021, the North Carolina product will likely need an injury in the Cardinals' running back corps to see the active roster.
Aug 27, 2024
Waived by Arizona
Carter was waived by the Cardinals on Tuesday, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
The running back ended 2023 as James Conner's backup but got bumped lower after the selection of Trey Benson in the 2024 NFL Draft. Carter, a sixth-round pick in 2021, recorded 639 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie with the Jets but has been trending down ever since.
Aug 16, 2024
Competing for role behind Conner
Carter is competing for standing on Arizona's roster behind starter James Conner, after having ended the 2023 season in the No. 2 role, Jeremy Cluff of the Arizona Republic reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter totaled 30 carries for 187 yards across 15 regular-season games between the Jets and Cardinals last season, in addition to 24 catches for 101 yards and one touchdown on 31 targets. Now, though, the addition of rookie third-round pick Trey Benson has crowded Arizona's backfield, and Carter is competing for standing alongside Emari Demercado (shoulder) and DeeJay Dallas, in addition to Tony Jones. It would help Carter's case to impress in the preseason, with Saturday's exhibition game against the Colts representing his next chance to do so.
Feb 3, 2024
Ends 2023 as Conner's main backup
Carter compiled 30 carries for 187 yards and 24 catches (on 31 targets) for 101 yards and one touchdown in 15 games between the Jets and Cardinals during the 2023 season.
ANALYSIS
After racking up 338 touches in 30 contests for the Jets to begin his career, the 2021 sixth-round pick took a back seat to Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook in New York to kick off this past campaign. Carter subsequently was cut loose by the Jets after Week 10 and promptly was claimed off waivers by the Cardinals. From that point on, he was the Arizona running back called on most behind starter James Conner, averaging a healthy 6.8 yards on 22 rushes. Carter has one year remaining on his rookie contract, so he and Emari Demercado likely will serve as the team's top reserve RBs in 2024.
Jan 2, 2024
Scores first TD of season
Carter compiled 61 yards on seven carries and a six-yard touchdown on his only target during Sunday's 35-31 win in Philadelphia.
ANALYSIS
Carter accounted for three of the Cardinals' six longest plays Week 17, all of them runs (21, 18 and 16 yards). Thus, his other five touches resulted in only 12 yards from scrimmage, but he made his only catch count with an end-zone visit to kick off the scoring in the third quarter. Carter seemingly has been alternating with Emari Demercado (no carries, one catch on three targets Sunday) as the Arizona RB to be the primary option behind starter James Conner, who again dominated with 27 touches for 133 total yards and two TDs. Considering the lack of consistent work, Carter will be tough to trust in the team's season finale Sunday versus the Seahawks.
Dec 18, 2023
Accounts for six touches Sunday
Carter tallied three carries for 27 yards and three catches (on three targets) for 10 yards during Sunday's 45-29 defeat to the 49ers.
ANALYSIS
On a day in which the Cardinals racked up 234 rushing yards, Carter made the most of his sparse touches, including a long rush of 19 yards. Both he and fellow reserve running back Emari Demercado earned 18 offensive plays, but the latter was far more productive to the tune of five touches for 70 yards from scrimmage and one TD. James Conner again led Arizona's backfield with 36 plays and 17 touches for 89 total yards and a rushing score, so Carter remains second or third fiddle, at best, at the position on the Cards.
Dec 5, 2023
Nets 25 rushing yards Sunday
Carter recorded four carries for 25 yards during Sunday's 24-10 win at Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
With fellow running back Emari Demercado departing early due to a neck injury, Carter was the only other Cardinals RB not named James Conner to see action Week 13. Carter's 19-yard run on third-and-6 late in the second quarter kept an eventual TD drive alive, and he now may be the team's No. 2 back moving forward considering he's averaged 5.5 yards on his eight carries in two appearances for Arizona.
Nov 29, 2023
Notches four touches in team debut
Carter recorded four carries for 19 yards and reeled in all four targets for 15 yards during Sunday's 37-14 defeat to the Rams.
ANALYSIS
In his Cardinals debut, Carter took on a surprising snap share (38 percent) behind starting running back James Conner (42 percent) while ranking ahead of the returning Emari Demercado (20 percent). Carter actually outproduced Conner in total yards, 34-32, on two fewer touches, and Demercado was a distant third in the category with three touches (all carries) for 15 yards. Arizona may have been easing Demercado back in after he missed the previous three contests due to a toe injury, but the breakdown of reps between the three bears watching to see if Carter may be the preferred No. 2 RB option ahead of Demercado, starting Sunday in Pittsburgh.
Nov 26, 2023
Set to make debut with Arizona
Carter is active for Sunday's contest versus the Rams, Darren Urban of the Cardinals official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Arizona claimed Carter off waivers from the Jets on Nov. 15, but he didn't have enough time to learn the playbook before the team's Week 11 game four days later. With a week and a half under his belt, though, he'll be among the two options behind starting RB James Conner along with Emari Demercado (toe), while Keaontay Ingram is a healthy scratch.
Nov 19, 2023
Healthy scratch Sunday
Carter (coach's decision) is inactive for Sunday's game in Houston.
ANALYSIS
After the Jets waived him Tuesday, Carter was claimed by the Cardinals on Wednesday, but the brief time to get acclimated to a new offense won't allow him to be available for his new team right off the bat. With Emari Demercado (toe) also out, Keaontay Ingram and Tony Jones will be the reserve running backs behind top option James Conner in Week 11.
Nov 17, 2023
Has chance to play Saturday
Carter may be a part of the Cardinals backfield Sunday at Houston with Emari Demercado (toe) ruled out for that contest, Darren Urban of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
James Conner owns Arizona's backfield when healthy, and he proved as much this past Sunday against the Falcons after a stint on IR, handling 63 percent of snaps and turning 16 carries into 73 yards. That left only three rushes combined for Keaontay Ingram and Tony Jones, and with the team claiming Carter off waivers Wednesday, his presence may result in Jones not being elevated from the practice squad this week. On the season, Carter averaged 4.8 yards on his eight carries and also hauled in 15 of 20 targets for 68 yards in nine games for the Jets.
Nov 15, 2023
Gets picked up by Arizona
The Cardinals claimed Carter off waivers Wednesday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Despite having James Conner (knee) back in the fold as of this past Sunday against the Falcons, the Cardinals are exploring all options to round out their backfield depth. Carter didn't get much work in nine appearances for the Jets this season, but he did average 4.8 yards on his eight carries and also reeled in 15 of his 20 targets. Behind Conner, Carter will join Emari Demercado (toe) and Keaontay Ingram as reserve RBs on Arizona's active roster.
Nov 14, 2023
Cut loose by Jets
The Jets waived Carter on Tuesday, Ethan Greenberg of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter accounted for 964 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns over 14 games as a rookie in 2021, but his role has declined in the subsequent two seasons with the Jets drafting a franchise back in 2022 (Breece Hall) and bringing in a high-profile free agent (Dalvin Cook) this offseason. While serving as the Jets' No. 3 option all season, Carter has carried eight times for 38 yards to go with 15 catches for 48 yards in nine games. Carter's lack of efficiency as the team's third-down back appears to be the impetus for the Jets to move on from him and open up opportunities for rookie fifth-round pick Israel Abanikanda, who had yet to make his NFL debut. Given his solid overall body of work over his first three seasons, Carter is likely to quickly get scooped up by another team.
Nov 13, 2023
Blanked in Week 10
Carter didn't record a rushing attempt and failed to catch his only target in Sunday's 16-12 loss to the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Carter took advantage of some extra usage in a blowout Week 9 loss en route to a season-high six catches, but this game was competitive throughout, so Carter ceded the majority of snaps to Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook. Hall was on the field for 46 of New York's 66 offensive snaps, while Cook played 10 and Carter played nine.
Nov 7, 2023
Five catches on final drive
Carter didn't record a carry but caught all six of his targets for 24 yards in Monday's 27-6 loss to the Chargers.
ANALYSIS
Five of Carter's six catches came on the Jets' last drive with the result no longer in doubt, as Zach Wilson consistently checked the ball down to the running back underneath with Los Angeles' defense sagging back. Breece Hall continues to handle the lion's share of touches in New York's backfield, with Carter and Dalvin Cook splitting the remaining scraps.
Oct 29, 2023
Two carries after bye
Carter rushed twice for two yards and didn't catch his lone target in Sunday's 13-10 overtime win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Carter and Dalvin Cook each got two touches while Breece Hall turned 12 carries and nine targets into 93 scrimmage yards and the Jets' only touchdown. There's a chance the Jets will trade Cook before the Oct. 31 deadline, which would likely free up a few more touches per game for Carter, but Hall remains the clear lead back for Gang Green.
Oct 16, 2023
One carry in Week 6 win
Carter rushed once for five yards and didn't catch his only target in Sunday's 20-14 win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Carter once again finished third among New York's running backs in touches behind Breece Hall (17) and Dalvin Cook (four). Expect Carter to remain in a depth role after the Jets' Week 7 bye.
Oct 9, 2023
Continues to fill depth role
Carter rushed once for eight yards and caught all three of his targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 31-21 win over the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Carter and Breece Hall were each targeted three times while Dalvin Cook finished without a target, but Hall worked as the clear bellcow on the ground with 22 carries for 177 yards and a touchdown. Cook rushed six times for 23 yards and is averaging 2.7 yards per rushing attempt compared to Carter's five carries for 31 yards (6.2 YPC) in 2023. Carter's superior efficiency could allow him to supplant Cook as the primary backup to Hall down the line, but Hall should continue to handle the majority of opportunities in the Jets' backfield as long as he's healthy.
Oct 2, 2023
Limited to three touches again
Carter rushed once for nine yards and caught two of three targets for 12 yards in Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Chiefs.
ANALYSIS
Carter's three touches tied a season-high mark that he has now reached in three of four games. Barring an injury to Breece Hall or Dalvin Cook, Carter will likely remain an afterthought in the Jets' offense, though he could supplant Cook as the No. 2 running back if the veteran continues to struggle. Cook has just 58 rushing yards on 23 carries (2.3 YPC), while Carter has 23 yards on four rushing attempts (5.8 YPC).
Sep 24, 2023
One touch in Week 3 loss
Carter didn't have a rushing attempt and caught his only target for three yards in Sunday's 15-10 loss to the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Carter continues to work as the clear No. 3 running back behind Breece Hall and Dalvin Cook, who had 18 rushing yards apiece on 12 and eight carries, respectively. Between Carter's lack of playing time and the Jets' collective struggles on offense, Carter won't be a recommended fantasy option in Week 4 against Kansas City.
Sep 23, 2023
Practices in full
Carter (elbow) was a full participant at Friday's practice.
ANALYSIS
After consecutive days of limited participation at practice, Carter logged a full workload Friday and looks good to go for Week 3. He has accumulated eight tackles (six solo) on 87 defensive snaps through two games this season.
Sep 18, 2023
Part of unproductive RB rotation
Carter rushed twice for eight yards and caught one of two targets for three yards in Sunday's 30-10 loss to the Cowboys.
ANALYSIS
The Jets fell behind early and failed to establish the run. Fellow running backs Breece Hall (four carries for nine yards) and Dalvin Cook (four carries for seven yards) fared no better than Carter on the ground, while quarterback Zach Wilson led the team with 36 rushing yards on five scrambles. New York will look to bounce back at home against the Patriots in Week 3, but Carter remains third in the backfield pecking order behind Hall and Cook.
Sep 17, 2023
Team cautious with injury
Carter (elbow) did not return to Sunday's 30-10 loss to the Jets, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter reportedly could have returned to the game, but the Jets were content with taking the cautious approach with their nickel cornerback. The 24-year-old seems likely to be able to play in Week 3 versus New England, but more information on his status will likely come when New York returns to practice this week.
Sep 17, 2023
Suffers elbow injury
Carter is questionable to return to Sunday's game against Dallas due to an elbow injury.
ANALYSIS
Carter recorded three tackles before suffering the injury. If he's unable to return, Justin Hardee and Brandin Echols would be candidates for increased snaps behind D.J. Reed and Sauce Gardner.
Sep 12, 2023
Three touches in Week 1 win
Carter rushed once for six yards and caught both of his targets for 12 yards in Monday's 22-16 overtime win over the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Carter got three touches while Dalvin Cook and Breece Hall combined for 27 in the season-opening win. It will likely take an injury to one of the team's top two running backs for Carter to get more than a handful of touches per game in an offense that will be helmed by Zach Wilson moving forward after Aaron Rodgers ruptured his Achilles. Up next for Carter and the Jets is a Week 2 trip to Dallas.
Aug 26, 2023
Just one yard Saturday
Carter was held to one rushing yard on four attempts (no receptions) in Saturday's 32-24 preseason win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Carter was the first back to receive a carry for the Jets with Dalvin Cook and Breece Hall sitting out Saturday's exhibition finale. The 2021 fourth-round pick projects to serve as the Jets' third back despite Saturday's poor showing, but he won't carry fantasy value in that role this year.
Aug 19, 2023
Getting Saturday night off
Carter didn't dress for Saturday night's preseason game against the Bucs, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
While Carter got the night off, both Zonovan Knight and rookie Israel Abanikanda are dressed and playing versus Tampa Bay. It's a signal from the coaching staff that Carter is firmly ahead of both for the Jets' No. 3 running back job behind Breece Hall and newcomer Dalvin Cook.
Aug 15, 2023
Bumped down to third on depth chart
Carter's expected to be the Jets' No. 3 running back this season, as Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports that the team has agreed to a one-year contract with Dalvin Cook (shoulder).
ANALYSIS
Both Cook and Breece Hall (knee) are recovering from injuries, but New York's optimistic that they will both be available come Week 1. Carter has been working ahead of Zonovan Knight and rookie firth-round pick Israel Abanikanda in training camp, so the 2021 fourth-round pick remains likely to secure a roster spot in New York's deep backfield. Barring a setback or new injury for one of Cook or Hall, Carter's role is expected to be limited. Hall and Cook have career averages of 5.8 and 4.7 yards per carry, respectively, well above Carter's 4.0 YPC.
Aug 12, 2023
Effective on first two drives
Carter rushed four times for 19 yards and caught both of his targets for 34 yards in Saturday's 27-0 preseason win over the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Carter got the start, but Zonovan Knight (16 yards on five touches) also mixed in on the team's first possession as both running backs made their respective preseason debuts after sitting out the Hall of Fame Game. A 25-yard catch on the opening possession accounted for almost half of Carter's yardage, which was accrued across the Jets' first two drives. In the event that Breece Hall's (knee) absence lingers into the regular season, Carter and Knight would likely open the season in a timeshare, but Carter's superior receiving skills should allow him to carve out a change-of-pace role even once Hall is healthy. Rookie fifth-round pick Israel Abanikanda is also vying for playing time, but he's likely more of a threat to Knight's role than Carter's.
Aug 3, 2023
Not playing Thursday
Carter isn't slated to suit up for Thursday's Hall of Fame Game versus the Browns, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Breece Hall continues to reside on the active/PUP list due to the ACL tear that he suffered Week 7 of last season. Meanwhile, Carter and Zonavon Knight also won't play Thursday, leaving rookie Israel Abanikanda, Travis Dye and Damarea Crockett as the Jets' backfield options for the team's preseason opener. Carter's next chance to get exhibition action is Saturday, Aug. 12 at Carolina.
Jul 25, 2023
Feels good heading into Year 3
Carter is optimistic that he will bounce back in 2023 after a tough sophomore season in 2022, Andy Vasquez of NJ.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter worked in a change-of-pace role behind Breece Hall early in 2022 but failed to step up after Hall suffered a season-ending ACL tear. The Jets faced stacked boxes due to their poor quarterback play, and Carter found minimal room to showcase his speed, dropping from 964 scrimmage yards in 14 games as a rookie to 690 in 16 appearances in his second season. Hall's still recovering from his knee injury but the Jets drafted Israel Abanikanda in the fifth round in 2023 as insurance. Even if Hall regains health by Week 1, Carter's receiving ability should keep him involved in the game plan.
Jan 8, 2023
Totals 690 yards in second season
Carter rushed three times for four yards and caught two of three targets for one yard in Sunday's 11-6 loss to the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Carter struggled down the stretch along with the entire Jets offense. He totaled 402 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 114 carries while catching 41 of 554 targets for 288 yards over 16 appearances in 2022. Carter was used primarily in a change-of-pace role in his second NFL season, and he'll likely see similar usage in 2023.
Jan 2, 2023
Just five total yards in Week 17
Carter rushed once for two yards and caught two of three targets for three yards in Sunday's 23-6 loss to Seattle.
ANALYSIS
Carter was used sparingly while Ty Johnson and Zonovan Knight racked up eight rushing attempts apiece, totaling 46 and 27 yards, respectively. New York's injury-riddled offense has fallen apart down the stretch, and Carter hasn't mustered more than 21 rushing yards in a game since Week 9. The 2021 fourth-round pick will wrap up his second NFL season against the Dolphins in Week 18.
Dec 23, 2022
Leading receiver in Week 16 loss
Carter rushed twice for six yards and brought in all five targets for 44 yards in the Jets' 19-3 loss to the Jaguars on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
The conventional Jets ground attack was an abject failure Thursday night -- Carter, Zonovan Knight and Ty Johnson combined for 11 yards on 10 carries -- but Carter found a way to salvage his night somewhat with his work through the air. The second-year back paced the Jets in receptions and receiving yards, with both totals also serving as his second highest of the campaign. Given the general state of disarray the Jets' offense is in, it's difficult to predict if there will be a clear-cut early-down back between Carter and Knight in a Week 17 road matchup against the vulnerable Seahawks run defense a week from Sunday.
Dec 18, 2022
Five touches in Week 15
Carte rushed four times for 15 yards and caught his only target for 16 yards in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Lions.
ANALYSIS
After going without a touch well into the third quarter, Carter made a spectacular play to bail out quarterback Zach Wilson, plucking a sitting duck of a throw out of the air for a 16-yard gain. Carter was rewarded with rushing attempts on the next two plays, which went for a combined nine yards. He added two more carries over the course of the game and was more effective on a per-touch basis than Zonovan Knight, who mustered only 23 yards on 13 carries. Carter may get more touches Thursday against the Jaguars if Knight struggles early, though New York could also opt to reintroduce James Robinson (coach's decision) into the backfield mix against Robinson's former team.
Dec 11, 2022
Struggles in return from injury
Carter (ankle) rushed five times for five yards and caught three of six targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 20-12 loss to Buffalo. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Carter ceded most of the backfield opportunities to Zonovan Knight, who rushed for 71 yards and New York's only touchdown on 17 attempts. The former also lost a crucial fumble just outside the red zone with the Jets trailing by 11 in the fourth quarter. This disastrous performance won't help Carter cut into Knight's workload in Week 15, though there could be enough opportunities to go around for both Jets running backs to find success in Week 15 against the leaky Lions run defense.
Dec 11, 2022
Active, could cede work to Knight
Carter (ankle) is officially active for Sunday's game against the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Carter is back in action following a one-game absence and with James Robinson a healthy scratch, he'll be part of a Week 14 backfield that also includes Zonovan Knight and Ty Johnson. When healthy, Carter had been serving as the Jets' top back since Breece Hall suffered a season-ending knee injury Week 7, but Rich Cimini of ESPN.com suggests that Knight could claim a larger portion of the team's carries versus Buffalo, on the heels of two straight strong efforts in relief of injured Carter.
Dec 7, 2022
Dodges injury report
Carter (ankle) wasn't listed on the Jets' injury report Wednesday, per the team's official site.
ANALYSIS
Carter was forced out of New York's Week 13 loss to the Vikings due to an apparent ankle injury, but his absence from Wednesday's injury report implies that the issue is no longer a concern. The 23-year-old is slated to continue operating as the team's No. 3 cornerback behind Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed when the Jets travel to Buffalo this weekend.
Dec 7, 2022
Set to practice fully
Carter (ankle) is slated to practice fully Wednesday, Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter is thus poised to be back in action Sunday against the Bills following a one-game absence. In his looming return to the lineup, Carter should reclaim a solid share of the Jets' backfield touches, however per Al Iannazzone of Newsday, coach Robert Saleh indicated that Zonovan Knight is in line to remain in the RB rotation this weekend on the heels of looking sharp while filling in for Carter over the Jets' last two games.
Dec 4, 2022
Injured Sunday
Carter is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Vikings with an ankle injury.
ANALYSIS
Carter logged three tackles before picking up an ankle issue at some point in the first half, though it's unclear when or how this injury occurred. In his absence, expect Brandon Echols and Justin Hardee to step up into bigger roles behind starting cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed.
Dec 4, 2022
Inactive Sunday
Carter (ankle) is inactive for Sunday's game against the Vikings.
ANALYSIS
Carter, who is dealing with a reported low-ankle sprain, didn't practice this past week before being deemed doubtful for the contest. In Carter's absence, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network relays via coach Robert Saleh that the Jets plan to utilize a backfield-by-committee in Week 13 that will include rookie Zonovan Knight, Ty Johnson and James Robinson. Of the three, Knight, who carried 14 times for 69 yards and caught all three of his targets for 34 yards in relief of Carter last weekend versus Chicago, looks like the upside play, though Johnson (five carries for 62 yards and TD, plus one catch for 16 yards against the Bears) should also factor in, while Robinson (a healthy scratch last week) will look to reclaim a role in New York's backfield in his return to the mix. Carter's next chance to return to the lineup will arrive in Week 14 when the Jets face the Bills on the road.
Dec 2, 2022
Officially doubtful for Week 13
Carter (ankle) didn't practice Friday and is listed as doubtful for Sunday's contest at Minnesota, Adam Caplan of SiriusXM NFL Radio reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter was forced out of this past Sunday's win against the Bears with what eventually was termed a low-ankle sprain, which left him day-to-day. However, with no practice reps under his belt this week, he seems destined to be among the Jets' inactives this weekend. If Carter is unable to play, the Jets likely will roll with Zonovan Knight and Ty Johnson at running back, though James Robinson also could join the mix if he isn't a health scratch for a second straight game.
Dec 2, 2022
Likely out Sunday
Coach Robert Saleh said Friday that Carter (ankle) is doubtful to play Sunday against the Vikings, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The 23-year-old was unable to practice Wednesday and Thursday, and it appears his outlook hasn't significantly improved Friday. Carter isn't expected to be available Sunday in Minnesota, which opens the door for Ty Johnson and Zonovan Knight to take on expanded roles.
Dec 1, 2022
Not practicing Thursday
Carter (ankle) wasn't spotted at practice Thursday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter didn't practice Wednesday, so what he's able to do Friday will be key with regard to his chances of suiting up Sunday against the Vikings. If Carter ends up missing the contest, Zonovan Knight and Ty Johnson would be in line for expanded roles in Week 13, while James Robinson, who was a healthy inactive this past weekend, could also re-enter the Jets' backfield mix.
Nov 30, 2022
Set to miss practice Wednesday
Carter (ankle) won't practice Wednesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The report notes that coach Robert Saleh is hopeful that Carter, who is dealing with a low-ankle sprain, will be able to play Sunday against the Vikings, but for now the running back is day-to-day. If Carter ends up being sidelined or limited this weekend, Zonovan Knight and Ty Johnson would be in line for added Week 13 opportunities, along with James Robinson, who was a healthy scratch in the Jets' Week 12 win over the Bears.
Nov 28, 2022
Considered day-to-day
Coach Robert Saleh said Monday that Carter has a low-ankle sprain and is considered day-to-day, Connor Hughes of SNY.tv reports.
ANALYSIS
Saleh added that he'll have more information Wednesday, when the team begins Week 13 prep, but as of Monday, it appears Carter will have a chance to play Sunday against the Vikings. This appears to be the best case scenario for the running back, who was in danger of missing the entire campaign after initial reports suggested he suffered a high-ankle sprain. With Breece Hall (knee) on IR, Carter appears to be the team's No. 1 back ahead of Ty Johnson, Zonovan Knight and mid-season acquisition James Robinson, who was a healthy scratch for Week 12.
Nov 27, 2022
Likely has ankle sprain
Coach Robert Saleh said Carter likely suffered a sprained ankle during Sunday's 31-10 win against the Bears, asdf reports.
ANALYSIS
At the time of his departure in the second half, Carter had six carries for 21 yards and hauled in both of his targets for 15 yards. Saleh noted the Jets will have more information regarding Carter's injury Monday, so testing seemingly is in store to learn its extent. With Breece Hall (knee) on injured reserve and James Robinson a healthy scratch Sunday, Ty Johnson and Zonovan Knight were New York's healthy and available running backs by the end of Sunday's contest.
Nov 27, 2022
Exits Sunday's game
Carter was forced out of Sunday's game against the Bears with an ankle injury.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit from the contest, Carter had carried six times for 21 yards and caught two passes for 15 yards. In his absence, added backfield touches are available for Zonovan Knight and Ty Johnson.
Nov 23, 2022
Not on injury report
Carter isn't listed on the Jets' initial injury report ahead of Week 12, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter was forced out of the team's Week 11 loss to New England due to a chest injury, but it appears he's moved past the issue and should be available for Week 12. The cornerback has totaled 36 tackles, six pass defenses and two interceptions across 10 appearances this season.
Nov 20, 2022
Bottled up in Week 11 loss
Carter rushed eight times for 19 yards and caught one of two targets for minus-2 yards in Sunday's 10-3 loss to New England.
ANALYSIS
Carter ran for only seven yards on four carries in the first half, but James Robinson mustered just three yards on three rushing attempts as New York's running game was bottled up. Things didn't get much better for either running back after halftime, as New York mustered only 59 rushing yards collectively, and a team-high 26 of those came from quarterback Zach Wilson. The entire Jets offense laid an egg in this one to drop to 6-4, but a bounce-back opportunity awaits in Week 12 at home against the 3-8 Bears.
Nov 20, 2022
Exits versus New England
Carter (chest) is questionable to return to Sunday's game against the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Carter was forced out with a chest injury at some point during the second half, leaving him with less than one quarter to return before the end of this contest. In his stead, Brandin Echols and Justin Hardee should see increased usage behind starting cornerbacks D.J. Reed and Sauce Gardner.
Nov 6, 2022
Splits with Robinson in win
Carter rushed 12 times for 76 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 20-17 win over the Bills. He also caught his only target for 10 yards.
ANALYSIS
Carter was out-touched 15-13 by James Robinson, who came into the game nursing a knee injury. Both running backs got into the end zone, and Carter finished with 86 scrimmage yards to Robinson's 53. Carter cut Buffalo's lead to 14-10 in the final minute of the first half with a six-yard rushing touchdown, then Robinson put New York ahead with a seven-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. Given the Jets' commitment to running the ball despite losing Breece Hall (knee) for the season, both Carter and Robinson should continue to garner double-digit touches after the team's Week 10 bye.
Oct 30, 2022
Has pick-six negated
Carter totaled seven solo tackles, one tackle for loss and an interception in Sunday's 22-17 loss to the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Carter intercepted Mac Jones in the second quarter. Two drives later, Carter made another interception and took it to the house, but the play was negated by a questionable roughing the passer penalty on John Franklin-Myers. That play proved to be the turning point in the game, as the Patriots went on to outscore New York 19-7 after Carter's pick-six was taken off the board.
Oct 30, 2022
Gets seven carries, seven targets
Carter rushed seven times for 26 yards and caught four of seven targets for 35 yards in Sunday's 22-17 loss to the Patriots.
ANALYSIS
Carter got seven rushing attempts to five for new teammate James Robinson, but the absence of Breece Hall's (knee) big play ability in the backfield forced the Jets to go more pass-heavy. That approach led to more chunk plays through the air and a handful of opportunities for Carter as a pass catcher, but Zach Wilson threw three costly interceptions. Carter's ability to contribute as both a rusher and receiver should keep his touch floor high in Week 9 against the Bills and beyond, regardless of game script.
Oct 24, 2022
Joined by Robinson after trade
The Jets have agreed to a trade for Jacksonville running back James Robinson (knee), Connor Hughes of SNY.tv reports, which will likely push Carter back to a change-of-pace role.
ANALYSIS
Carter will likely see similar usage to what he has been seeing all season, while Robinson will step into the featured role previously occupied by Breece Hall, who suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Sunday's win over the Broncos. Robinson is currently battling some knee soreness, but the Jets presumably did their due diligence and determined him to be relatively healthy before agreeing to trade for the former 1,000-yard rusher.
Oct 24, 2022
Lead back moving forward
Testing confirmed that Breece Hall (knee) suffered a torn ACL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports, so Carter's poised to become the Jets' lead back moving forward.
ANALYSIS
Carter had been seeing around 10 touches per game as a complement to Hall, but the second-year running back out of UNC will likely handle 15-plus touches on a regular basis moving forward as the top backfield option in a run-heavy Jets offense. Third-stringer Ty Johnson should also see an increase in playing time as a result of Hall's injury, but Carter's ability to play in all situations should allow him to take on most of the touches vacated by Hall's absence.
Oct 23, 2022
Gets 15 touches with Hall injured
Carter rushed 13 times for 29 yards and caught both of his targets for 45 yards in Sunday's 16-9 win over the Broncos.
ANALYSIS
Both offenses struggled in this one, but the largest development for Carter was the exit of Breece Hall (knee) with what's feared to be a torn ACL. Carter took over as the primary running back after Hall's exit and failed to find much room on the ground but set up a field goal with a 37-yard catch. After getting no more than 12 touches in any of the previous five games, Carter will likely see significantly more usage in Week 8 against the Patriots and beyond with Hall sidelined.
Oct 16, 2022
Seven touches in win at Lambeau
Carter rushed six times for 41 yards and caught his only target for six yards in Sunday's 27-10 win over Green Bay.
ANALYSIS
The Jets used Breece Hall (20 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown) as a workhorse in a game that started out as a defensive struggle before New York's running game got going. That left change-of-pace duties for Carter, who was effective in the limited role. Carter set a single-game season high by averaging 6.8 yards per carry in this one, bumping his season mark up to 3.8 heading into a Week 7 trip to Denver.
Oct 9, 2022
Scores first two TDs of 2022
Carter rushed 10 times for 21 yards and two touchdowns while catching both of his targets for 12 yards in Sunday's 40-17 win over the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
Carter punched in his first touchdown of the season from one yard out to open the second quarter after Breece Hall did the heavy lifting to get New York down there with a 79-yard catch. In the fourth, a 21-yard Hall catch was followed by a one-yard Carter touchdown. Hall ultimately racked up 197 scrimmage yards to Carter's 33, so there's no question who the lead back is in New York, though this game showed that it's possible for both to find success in the right circumstances. Carter will likely continue to play a complementary role behind Hall in Week 6 against the Packers.
Oct 2, 2022
Outplayed by Hall in Week 4
Carter rushed nine times for 15 yards and caught two of three targets for 14 yards in Sunday's 24-20 win over Pittsburgh.
ANALYSIS
Carter was far less effective on the ground than Breece Hall, who rushed 17 times for 66 yards and a touchdown. After mustering 100 scrimmage yards on the dot in the season opener, Carter has totaled 50 or fewer in each of the subsequent three games and has yet to find the end zone in 2022. Hall and Carter will continue to split carries in Week 5 against the Dolphins.
Sep 25, 2022
Another 12-touch game
Carter rushed 11 times for 39 yards and caught one of two targets for seven yards in Sunday's 27-12 loss to the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Carter had five targets to Breece Hall's one last week, but Hall flipped the script with 11 targets this week, and the rookie second-round pick needed only eight carries to match Carter's rushing yardage total of 39. Both Jets running backs can play in all situations, which makes it tough to handicap how their touches will be distributed in Week 4 against the Steelers and beyond.

Out-touches Hall 12-8 in Week 2 win
Carter rushed seven times for 23 yards and caught all five of his targets for 27 yards in Sunday's 31-30 win over the Browns.
ANALYSIS
Carter got 12 touches to Breece Hall's eight, but Hall had the more productive afternoon, leading the team with 50 rushing yards and adding a receiving touchdown. Both dynamic young running backs should continue to play substantial roles in New York's offense against the Bengals in Week 3.
Sep 11, 2022
Totals 100 yards in lead role
Carter rushed 10 times for 60 yards and caught seven of nine targets for 40 yards in Sunday's 24-9 loss to the Ravens.
ANALYSIS
Carter was the lead back in a Jets offense that went with a game plan heavy on runs and short passes, though it wasn't all good for the second-year pro, who had an egregious drop on 4th and goal in the fourth quarter. Rookie second-round pick Breece Hall got just 12 touches and lost a fumble, further solidifying Carter as New York's top option heading into the Jets' Week 2 trip to Cleveland. A change in offensive approach is also unlikely as long as Joe Flacco's filling in for the injured Zach Wilson (knee), so Carter should be locked into significant volume for at least the next couple games, though in a low-octane offense.
Sep 9, 2022
Starting alongside Flacco
Carter will open the season on a Jets offense led by backup quarterback Joe Flacco against the Ravens on Sunday, Randy Lange of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Zach Wilson (knee) is expected to miss the first three weeks of the season, leaving Flacco as the Jets' top option under center. Carter's role won't be impacted significantly by the change under center, as he's still expected to form a platoon with rookie second-round pick Breece Hall. Wilson struggled with accuracy on checkdowns at times as a rookie, so having Flacco back there may actually help Carter's efficiency as a pass-catcher out of the backfield.
Aug 29, 2022
Fumbles in preseason finale
Carter rushed four times for 10 yards and caught one of two targets for 10 yards in Sunday's 31-27 preseason win over the Giants. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Carter rotated with rookie second-round pick Breece Hall on the first-team offense. He only fumbled once as a rookie last season, so Carter's miscue in this one shouldn't raise too many red flags. Carter's set to open the regular season as part of a timeshare with Hall.
Aug 23, 2022
Should play this week
Carter and other key players for the Jets are expected to play in Sunday's preseason game against the Giants, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter started the preseason opener before sitting out the second game along with other key veterans. Rookie Breece Hall played both games, subbing in behind Carter in the first, but nobody will be surprised if the 36th overall pick in this year's draft ends up getting more touches once the games count. If Hall is as advertised and Carter builds on his strong rookie year, the Jets will soon have one of the top backfields in the league. Quarterback and O-line play are also big factors in RB fantasy production, though perhaps not as much for Carter if he's not getting many carries anyway and mostly plays on passing downs. It'll be interesting to see how the Jets split work between the two in the final preseason game Sunday.
Aug 14, 2022
Four touches in preseason opener
Carter rushed three times for five yards and caught his only target for seven yards in Friday's 24-21 preseason win over the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
Carter was used sparingly, as was rookie second-round pick Breece Hall, who mustered 15 yards on five carries. The two young running backs are expected to operate in a timeshare led by Hall once the games start to count.
Aug 3, 2022
Returns to full practice
Carter (ankle) practiced Wednesday, Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter took part in both team and individual drills after a minor injury limited his participation the day before. His fantasy value took a huge hit when the Jets drafted Breece Hall this summer, but Carter still figures to get weekly touches as the No. 2 back and is the favorite to handle obvious passing downs. Fantasy upside beyond RB3/FLEX range probably requires Hall to be injured or a total bust.
Aug 2, 2022
Limited by minor ankle injury
Carter is dealing with a minor ankle injury, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
The second-year back was limited in Tuesday's practice, but not held out entirely, suggesting his ankle injury isn't too much of a concern. Carter likely will be stuck in a backup role after the Jets drafted Breece Hall in the second round, but there will still be snaps available for the UNC product, especially on passing downs.
May 1, 2022
Team adds young stud at RB
Carter will be joined by rookie second-round pick Breece Hall in New York's backfield, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Hall was the first running back selected in the 2022 NFL Draft, as the Jets traded up two spots in the second round to grab him 36th overall. The Iowa State product is capable of playing a three-down role, but there should still be plenty of touches left over for Carter working alongside Hall. Carter proved capable of excelling in a timeshare while in college, as he topped 1,000 rushing yards in each of his final two years at UNC despite splitting carries with Javonte Williams.
Jan 10, 2022
Rookie season ends with whimper
Carter carried the ball nine times for 19 yards and failed to catch any of his three targets in Sunday's 27-10 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
The Jets' offense couldn't get much going on the ground or through the air in their season finale, and Zach Wilson ended up being the team's leading rusher with 24 yards. Carter showed flashes of upside in his first NFL campaign, finishing with 964 scrimmage yards through 14 games, and barring a significant offseason addition, he should be the primary option in the Jets' backfield in 2022.
Jan 7, 2022
Cleared for season finale
Carter (concussion) doesn't carry an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Bills after practicing fully Thursday and Friday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
With Carter, who was forced out of last Sunday's game against the Buccaneers due to a concussion, having been cleared for Week 18 action, he's in line to head the Jets' backfield this weekend against the Bills, with Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson and Austin Walter also candidates to mix in. The 2021 fourth-rounder will look to finish his rookie season on a high note while facing a Buffalo defense that's allowing an average of 113.6 rushing yards per game.
Jan 6, 2022
Logs full practice
Carter (concussion) returned to a full practice Thursday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
That's a big step in the right direction for the running back, who was a non-participant Wednesday. Friday's injury report will reveal whether Carter heads into the weekend minus a Week 18 injury designation, which hinges on him fully clearing the NFL's concussion protocols. If he does, he'd be in line to head the Jets' backfield Sunday against the Bills, with Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson and Austin Walter also candidates to mix in.
Jan 5, 2022
Misses practice, could still play
Carter (concussion) didn't practice Wednesday, but the Jets are optimistic he could play this Sunday against the Bills, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that Carter did some work on a side field Wednesday, suggesting he's already making progress through the NFL concussion protocol. The rookie got off to fast start in Sunday's eventual loss to Tampa, ripping off a 50-yard run in the first quarter before a concussion forced him out of the game. Coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday that Carter is "progressing well" and is expected back soon.
Jan 3, 2022
Concussion confirmed
Head coach Robert Saleh confirmed that Carter was placed in the concussion protocol after exiting in Sunday's 28-24 loss to the Buccaneers, Al Iannazzone of Newsday reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter got off to a nice start Sunday with three carries for 54 yards to go with a nine-yard reception on the Jets' two scoring drives in the first quarter, but the head injury prevented him from turning in an even bigger performance. According to Andy Vasquez of The Bergen Record, Saleh said the Jets are hopeful Carter can clear the five-step protocol ahead of the Week 18 game in Buffalo, so the rookie won't be shut down if he makes good progress in his recovery over the next few days. After Carter departed Sunday, Austin Walter led the backfield with 14 carries for 49 yards, but Tevin Coleman (reserve/COVID-19 list) could step in as the Jets' No. 1 option on the ground if he's cleared to play in Buffalo and Carter isn't available.
Jan 2, 2022
Won't return to action Sunday
Carter won't return to Sunday's game against the Buccaneers after suffering a concussion, Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to being forced out of the contest, Carter had recorded three carries for 54 yards and one catch for nine yards. In his absence, Austin Walter and Ty Johnson will handle the Jets' Week 17 backfield duties.
Jan 2, 2022
Possible concussion
Carter is being evaluated for a possible concussion during Sunday's game against the Buccaneers, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Prior to that, Carter had logged three carries for 54 yards and one catch for nine yards. Next up for the Jets' Week 17 carries in his absence are Austin Walter and Ty Johnson.
Dec 29, 2021
Returns from COVID list
Carter was activated from the reserve/COVID-19 Wednesday, Ethan Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter missed the Jets' Week 16 contest with the Jaguars, but he'll now be able to return to his nickelback role in the Jets' defense Sunday against the Buccaneers. The fifth-round selected rookie has 61 tackles (36 solo), four passes defensed and two fumble recoveries in 13 games.
Dec 26, 2021
Career-best rushing total in win
Carter rushed 16 times for 118 yards and caught two of three targets for six yards in Sunday's 26-21 win over the Jaguars.
ANALYSIS
Carter set a new career high in rushing yards, easily topping his previous best of 77 from the Week 8 win over the Bengals. With their top three wide receivers injured, the Jets pounded Jacksonville's defense into submission with 273 yards on the ground. Carter was significantly more effective than Tevin Coleman, who rushed 14 times for 57 yards, while quarterback Zach Wilson chipped in 91 rushing yards, including a 52-yard touchdown. Building on this productive effort won't be easy for Carter in Week 17 against the stout Tampa Bay run defense.
Dec 21, 2021
Placed on reserve/COVID-19 list
Carter (illness) was placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list Tuesday, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The cornerback tested positive Tuesday and will now enter the league's COVID-19 protocols, putting his availability for Sunday's game against the Jaguars in question. If Carter is forced to miss the game, Isaiah Dunn and Javelin Guidry may be asked to step into larger roles in the Jets' secondary.
Dec 19, 2021
Struggles in return
Carter (ankle) rushed eight times for 18 yards and caught one of two targets for two yards in Sunday's 31-24 loss to Miami.
ANALYSIS
Carter made his return after spending the previous three games on IR and split carries with Tevin Coleman, who gained 50 yards on his eight carries. The rookie looked tentative and tied his Week 1 career low with just 20 scrimmage yards, but Carter should shake off some of the rust in Week 16 against the Jaguars.
Dec 18, 2021
Activated ahead of Week 15
Carter (ankle) has been activated off IR in advance of Sunday's game against the Dolphins.
ANALYSIS
The move was expected, with Rich Cimini of ESPN.com previously relaying via coach coach Robert Saleh that Carter -- in his first game action since Week 11 -- will have "a significant role" on Sunday. With that in mind, look for the 2021 fourth-rounder to head the Jets' Week 15 rushing attack, with Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson also factoring in and Austin Walter and La'Mical Perine in reserve.
Dec 17, 2021
Will play Sunday
Carter (concussion) will play Sunday against the Dolphins,
ANALYSIS
Carter was able to log full practices all week after missing the Dolphins' Week 14 contest against the Saints. The rookie corner will look to provide a boost to the Jets' secondary Sunday against the Dolphins.
Dec 17, 2021
Set to return Sunday
Carter (ankle) is expected to be activated from injured reserve ahead of Sunday's game against the Dolphins, and coach Robert Saleh said the rookie will have "a significant role," Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter was designated to return from injured reserve Wednesday, and it appears the Jets will waste little time returning their talented rookie to the feature role in the backfield. Tevin Coleman (concussion) is also expected to return this week, so New York's backfield should be at full strength in Miami.
Dec 15, 2021
Designated to return from IR
Carter (ankle) has been designated to return from IR.
ANALYSIS
Carter, who suffered a low-grade high-ankle sprain in Week 11, is thus a candidate to be activated off IR in advance of Sunday's game against Miami, barring any setbacks. Meanwhile, fellow running back Tevin Coleman (concussion) is in line to be cleared for action this week as well, which sets the stage for the Jets' backfield to get a big lift in Week 15.
Dec 13, 2021
Likely to return Week 15
Jets head coach Robert Saleh said he expects Carter (ankle) to return from injured reserve for Sunday's game in Miami, Andy Vasquez of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie running back has been sidelined for New York's last three games with a low-grade ankle sprain, but he looks like he'll be in store for a minimum-length stay on IR. Before the Jets add him back to the roster, the team will presumably see how he checks out in their first Week 15 practice Wednesday, when he'll likely be designated for return from IR. If he demonstrates enough progress to get the green light for Sunday, Carter could immediately supplant Tevin Coleman (concussion) and Ty Johnson as the lead option out of the backfield. After seeing the field for no more than 46 percent of the Jets' offensive snaps through the first three weeks of the season, Carter handled at least half of the snaps in six straight games prior to exiting early with the injury Week 11. During that six-game stretch, Carter averaged 89.3 yards from scrimmage and 0.67 touchdowns on 13 carries and 4.3 receptions per contest.
Dec 10, 2021
Won't suit up vs. Saints
Carter (concussion) is ruled out for Sunday's game against the Saints, Brian Costello of the New York Post reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter suffered a concussion versus the Eagles in Week 13, and he will need to fully clear the league's related protocols before retaking the field. The rookie's next chance to play will come Dec. 19 versus the Dolphins.
Dec 5, 2021
Concussion confirmed
Carter suffered a concussion during Sunday's loss to the Eagles, Andy Vasquez of The Bergen Record reports.
ANALYSIS
Carter recorded two tackles before leaving the game with a concussion. The rookie fifth-round pick will have to clear protocols if he wants to return to action in Week 14.
Dec 5, 2021
Evaluated for concussion
Carter exited Sunday's game against the Eagles and is being evaluated for a concussion.
ANALYSIS
Carter exited the game in the second half and was seen entering the medical tent. If he is diagnosed with a concussion, he'll have to clear protocols to have the potential to return for a Week 14 matchup against the Saints. Prior to his exit, Carter had recorded two tackles.
Nov 27, 2021
Placed on IR
The Jets placed Carter (ankle) on injured reserve Saturday, ruling him out for Weeks 12-14, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Coach Robert Saleh already hinted at a multi-game absence, and Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the rookie likely would be out 2-3 weeks with a low-grade high ankle sprain. It's now confirmed as a minimum of three missed games, with Carter next eligible to play Week 15 against Jacksonville. The Jets are left with Ty Johnson, Tevin Coleman and La'Mical Perine in their backfield, with at least the first two expected to get work in the Week 12 game against Houston on Sunday.
Nov 22, 2021
Two-week absence confirmed
Head coach Robert Saleh confirmed that Carter will miss "a couple weeks" after he suffered a low-grade ankle sprain in Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dolphins, Ethan B. Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Saleh made the announcement minutes after Adam Schefter of ESPN reported the injury would sideline Carter for 2-to-3 weeks. While the rookie is out of action for the Jets' Week 12 game in Houston and likely, an additional contest of follow, expect the team to rely on the tandem of Ty Johnson and Tevin Coleman as its main options out of the backfield.
Nov 22, 2021
Likely to miss multiple games
Carter was diagnosed Monday with a low-grade high-ankle sprain that will likely keep him sidelined for 2-to-3 weeks, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Schefter's report indicates that Carter is dealing with either a Grade 1 or Grade 2 sprain after the running back was forced out of Sunday's 24-17 loss to the Dolphins with the injury. After the rookie running back exited the contest early in the third quarter, Tevin Coleman out-touched Ty Johnson by a 4-2 margin. Expect Coleman and Johnson to work in a loose timeshare while Carter is likely out for at least the next two games, with La'Mical Perine -- who was inactive Week 11 -- ranking third in the backfield pecking order.
Nov 21, 2021
Exits game with ankle injury
Carter was forced out of Sunday's game against the Dolphins with an ankle injury.
ANALYSIS
Prior to his exit from the contest, Carter had logged nine carries for 63 yards and caught his only target for two yards. In his absence, Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson are next up for the Jets' carries.
Nov 14, 2021
Finds paydirt in garbage time
Carter rushed 16 times for 39 yards and a touchdown while catching four of six targets for 43 yards in Sunday's 45-17 loss to the Bills.
ANALYSIS
Carter's one-yard touchdown came with the Jets trailing 38-3 in the fourth quarter, but they all count the same for fantasy, and the rookie running back has now scored in four of his last six games. He remains a steady contributor in the passing game, as well, having been targeted 31 times over the past four games while totaling at least 37 receiving yards in each of those. It's encouraging that Carter was able to contribute despite Mike White's horrendous 0:4 TD:INT, and Carter should maintain a prominent role in Week 11 against Miami regardless of whether White, Joe Flacco or Zach Wilson (knee) is named the Jets' starting quarterback.
Nov 5, 2021
Garners 86 total yards in loss
Carter rushed 13 times for 49 yards and brought in one of two targets for 37 yards in the Jets' 45-30 loss to the Colts on Thursday night.
ANALYSIS
Carter once again was the clear-cut leader in rushing touches and made excellent use of his one target as well. The rookie back's overall opportunities were limited by game script Thursday, but it was encouraging to see Carter log double-digit carries for the fifth straight contest anyhow. Carter's next matchup shapes up as an appreciably more difficult one, however, as the Jets host the Bills a week from Sunday in a Week 10 divisional clash.
Oct 31, 2021
Breakout performance in upset win
Carter rushed 15 times for 77 yards and a touchdown while adding nine catches for 95 yards on 14 targets in Sunday's 34-31 triumph over the Bengals.
ANALYSIS
Carter was the featured option in the Jets' offense with starting quarterback Zach Wilson (knee) and top wide receiver Corey Davis (hip) both sidelined, as the rookie running back led the team in both rushing and receiving yards. He capped New York's opening drive with an eight-yard touchdown run, and Carter consistently made plays as both a rusher and a pass-catcher for a Jets offense that came alive in Mike White's first NFL start at quarterback. Carter will be an intriguing fantasy option with White under center for Thursday's Week 9 clash against the Colts.
Oct 24, 2021
Tops 100 scrimmage yards in loss
Carter rushed 11 times for 37 yards and caught eight of nine targets for 67 yards in Sunday's 54-13 loss to the Patriots. He also lost a fumble.
ANALYSIS
Carter led the Jets in both rushing and receiving yards, but the strong effort was marred by the first fumble of the rookie's career. Backup quarterback Mike White checked down to Carter frequently after starter Zach Wilson left with a knee injury. If White remains under center, Carter would likely continue to play at outsize role in the passing game against the Bengals in Week 8 in addition to working as the top rushing option in the low-scoring Jets offense.
Oct 10, 2021
Reaches end zone again
Carter recorded 10 rushes for 38 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's loss to the Falcons. He added three receptions for 20 yards.
ANALYSIS
Carter accounted for 10 of the team's 18 rushing attempts, more than doubling the marks of both Ty Johnson and Tevin Coleman. He wasn't particularly effective, as his longest rush went for only nine yards. However, he did plunge into the end zone for a two-yard score midway through the fourth quarter. Carter also supplemented his performance with a career-best three receptions. Though the performance wasn't overly impressive, Carter continues to operate as the team's top back heading into a Week 6 bye.
Oct 3, 2021
Gets first TD in first NFL win
Carter rushed 13 times for 38 yards and a touchdown while catching one of three targets for minus-4 yards in Sunday's 27-24 overtime win over Tennessee.
ANALYSIS
Carter scored his first career touchdown on a two-yard run in the second quarter. He didn't find much running room, but Carter was clearly the team's primary running back option over Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson, who combined for seven rushing attempts and four targets. The rookie fourth-round pick will likely find more space to operate in Week 5, when the Jets jet over to London to face the Falcons.
Sep 27, 2021
Limited work as backfield leader
Carter recorded nine rushes for 24 yards in Sunday's Week 3 loss to the Broncos. He added two receptions for five yards.
ANALYSIS
With Tevin Coleman (illness) sidelined, Carter took over as the primary back for the Jets. However, the team's overall offensive ineffectiveness limited his potential to produce as the team had only 13 total rushing attempts. Carter did show bits of promise, picking up gains of eight and five yards while also recording a reception of 10 yards. It remains to be seen whether Coleman can return for the Jets' Week 4 matchup against the Titans. If he can't, Carter should have a better matchup to try to get the ball moving on the ground.
Sep 24, 2021
Time-share with Johnson on tap
With Tevin Coleman ruled out with a non-COVID illness, Carter and Ty Johnson are in line to head the Jets' backfield Sunday against the Broncos, Rich Cimini of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
A Carter/Johnson time-share was already in play this week after both backs logged 33 snaps in the Jets' Week 2 loss to the Patriots, with Carter recording 11 carries for 59 yards along with two catches for 29 yards and Johnson carrying 12 times for 50 yards. However with Coleman (five carries for 24 yards) unavailable this weekend, the Jets should feature a clear 1-2 punch of Carter and Johnson on Sunday, with La'Mical Perine and/or Josh Adams on hand to serve in a reserve capacity.
Sep 19, 2021
Eight tackles in first home game
Carter had eight tackles (four solo) in Sunday's 25-6 loss to New England.
ANALYSIS
Carter's stat line also included one tackle for loss. The rookie defensive back has quickly become a key piece of the Jets' inexperienced secondary, with 13 tackles through two games.
Sep 19, 2021
More involved in Week 2
Carter rushed 11 times for 59 yards and caught two of three targets for 29 yards in Sunday's 25-6 loss to New England.
ANALYSIS
Carter and Ty Johnson (12 carries for 50 yards) split primary running back duties, with Tevin Coleman (five carries for 24 yards) mixing in. The rookie fourth-round pick is quickly ascending toward the top of New York's backfield depth chart, and Carter has shown some nice burst in the early going. On the other hand, the Jets are unlikely to abandon the committee approach and have produced only 20 points through two games, so it's tough to trust anybody in their offense heading into a Week 3 trip to Denver.
Sep 12, 2021
Five touches in first game
Carter rushed four times for 16 yards and added a 14-yard catch on two targets in Sunday's 19-14 loss to the Panthers.
ANALYSIS
Carter and Ty Johnson each had four carries and one catch, while Tevin Coleman added nine carries without a target as New York rotated the three running backs fairly evenly. The rookie fourth-round pick has the most upside in the crowded Jets backfield, but it could take some time for Carter to separate himself from the alternative options as he acclimates to the NFL. Fantasy managers in shallow formats will likely try to avoid New York's backfield in general against the Patriots in Week 2.
Sep 8, 2021
Healthy for NFL debut
Carter isn't listed on the injury report for Sunday's game at Carolina.
ANALYSIS
The rookie fourth-round pick missed some practices in late August with an undisclosed injury, finishing the summer on a down note after some hype early on in training camp. Carter still figures to get snaps on offense Week 1, but likely as part of a backfield committee with Tevin Coleman and Ty Johnson.
Aug 30, 2021
Injury deemed minor
Carter's unspecified injury isn't viewed as a serious issue, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With that, we'll consider the rookie back day-to-day. When healthy, the 2021 fourth-rounder will look will look to carve out a role in a Jets backfield that also includes Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson and La'Mical Perine. Heading into the regular season, it appears as though the Jets will employ a committee approach, per ESPN's Rich Cimini. For now, look for Coleman and Johnson to lead the way, at least out of the gate, but Cimini notes that Carter "has the most upside, but the rookie might need a little time before he finds a niche."
Aug 30, 2021
May be banged up
Carter may be dealing with an injury, as he was in the rehab area at Monday's practice, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
It's been an interesting summer for the fourth-round pick, starting with the first week of training camp when he reportedly got regular work with the first-team offense. Fantasy attention followed, but recent indicators point more toward a Gang Green backfield committee with three or even four players involved. Given his age, draft position and receiving ability, Carter remains the upside play among the bunch, though it isn't clear who out of him, Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson or even La'Mical Perine (foot) will get the most work. The rookie finished his first NFL preseason with a respectable stat line -- 24 carries for 86 yards and three catches for 15 yards on three targets -- but it seems he may have gotten banged up in Friday's exhibition with the Eagles. Carter has two weeks to get ready for the season opener at Carolina on Sept. 12.
Aug 28, 2021
Unimpressive in preseason finale
Carter carried the ball seven times for 12 yards and caught his only target for seven yards in Friday's preseason tie against the Eagles.
ANALYSIS
With Tevin Coleman held out of the preseason finale and La'Mical Perine (foot) banged up, Carter and Ty Johnson split snaps in the backfield with the first-team offense. Johnson overshadowed the rookie however, as did Josh Adams, who didn't see the field until later in the first half. Carter had some buzz going earlier in training camp, but it looks like he'll open the regular season either third or fourth on the depth chart depending on Perine's health, and he will need to force his way into a more prominent role in what looks like a true backfield committee for the Jets.
Aug 21, 2021
Fourth back in game Saturday
Carter gained 52 rushing yards on 10 carries while losing one yard while catching his only target in Saturday's preseason win over the Packers.
ANALYSIS
While his numbers were good, the context was not -- Carter didn't see action until the third quarter and was the fourth Jets' back in the game, entering after Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson and La'Mical Perine had already gotten snaps. The team's initial depth chart had listed him fourth as well, and while Carter is seen to have more upside than the RBs he's competing with, the 2021 fourth-round pick may have to earn his touches as the regular season progresses rather than seeing big volume right out of the gate.
Aug 14, 2021
Totals 31 scrimmage yards
Carter rushed seven times for 22 yards and caught his only target for nine yards in Saturday's 12-7 preseason win over the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Carter's expected to carve out a prominent role in New York's backfield as a rookie, and he split work with Ty Johnson in the first half here in a possible preview of his usage pattern. Tevin Coleman also figures to mix in frequently, but the veteran running back was held out of this one. Carter will likely handle a comparable workload against the Packers in Week 2 of preseason.
Aug 9, 2021
Looks to carve out role in offense
ESPN's Rich Cimini suggests that while Carter "might not be the (Jets') starting running back, per se," the fourth-rounder's "early work with the first team suggests he will be involved."
ANALYSIS
Based on Carter's average fantasy draft position this summer, it's clear that the North Carolina product is viewed as the upside play in the Jets' backfield, which could well emerge as a committee situation early on this season. Even if the rookie isn't officially acknowledged as the team's top back once Week 1 rolls around, we expect him to make a mark out of the gate, nonetheless, with the 5-foot-8, 201-pounder's pass-catching ability providing utility to the team's offense. In the Jets' initial unofficial depth chart, posted by the team's PR staff, Carter is listed behind Tevin Coleman, La'Mical Perine and Ty Johnson, but that's a listing that should probably be taken with a grain of salt, given that it's not uncommon for teams to place rookies on their preseason depth charts lower than what their practice reps/potential workload might otherwise suggest.

Gang Green's top RB in camp
Carter was described as "a step above" the Jets' other running backs in camp by Connor Hughes of The Athletic.

Carter has worked with the first-team offense, though Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson and La'Mical Perine remain on hand to jostle for playing time. The rookie fourth-round pick split time with Broncos second-rounder Javonte Williams at UNC, and there are concerns about whether Carter's 5-foot-8, 201-pound frame can hold up through the rigors of a starter's workload in the NFL, but Carter looks like the leading candidate to top the Jets' backfield in touches this season if he can stay healthy.

Opens camp with starters
Carter lined up with the starting offense Wednesday at the first practice of training camp, Connor Hughes of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
With fellow rookie Zach Wilson still unsigned, Carter was joined on the first unit by QB Mike White, WRs Corey Davis, Jamison Crowder and Keelan Cole and TE Tyler Kroft. The rookie running back out of UNC may still end up in a committee, but it's increasingly clear he's expected to fill a big role, perhaps even as the starter or lead back. Carter is competing with Tevin Coleman, Ty Johnson, La'Mical Perine, Josh Adams and Austin Walter in the New York backfield.

Earns coach's praise
Carter has impressed head coach Robert Saleh so far, Ethan Greenberg of the Jets' official site reports. "Michael's got tremendous vision," Saleh said. "He's got tremendous speed, burst. He's got the ability to make people miss. He's good on third down, coming out of the backfield in the pass game, and he's pretty stout in protection."
ANALYSIS
Saleh's praise of Carter's ability in pass protection is especially notable, as a lack of that skill often limits young running backs' playing time. The rookie fourth-round pick may not have the size to take on a workhorse role at 5-foot-8 and 201 pounds, but Carter could work as the Jets' third-down back from from the get-go, playing a similar role to Nyheim Hines in Indianapolis. Having averaged 8.0 yards per carry at UNC last season, Carter has the highest ceiling in the crowded Jets backfield, and Greenberg points out that Carter has played in an outside-zone rushing scheme since high school, making him an excellent fit for offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur's scheme.
