The Kansas City Chiefs will take on the San Francisco 49ers in a rematch of the Super Bowl in 2019. The Chiefs won that game, 31-20, and have since won two Super Bowls in three appearances during the Patrick Mahomes era. Can the Chiefs add a third Super Bowl in five seasons? Here’s a look at the opening odds for Super Bowl LVIII.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Sunday, February 11, 2024 – 06:30 PM ET at Allegiant Stadium
The San Francisco 49ers will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Chiefs didn’t have the most impressive regular season. However, with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback and Andy Reid as the signal caller, the Chiefs wouldn’t be denied.
Despite having to play three playoff games, with two of them on the road, Kansas City ran through the Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens to earn another Super Bowl appearance.
Chiefs’ Quest for Dynasty
The Chiefs already have two Super Bowl wins in three appearances with Mahomes, and they’ll be looking for a third ring in four appearances. With a win in this game, the Chiefs could finally call themselves a legitimate dynasty.
They’re going to be the third team in history to play in four Super Bowls over a five-year span. If they were to beat the 49ers, the Chiefs would be in the same company as the 1970s Steelers, 1990s Cowboys, and the 2000-2010 Patriots for winning three Super Bowls in a five-year span. Yes, that same Brady-Belichick team.
49ers Seeking Redemption
Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers didn’t always play their best in the playoffs. However, a win against the Packers, 24-21, and an epic comeback against the Lions helped the 49ers make the Super Bowl for the first time since 2019.
The 49ers didn’t win in 2019, losing to the Kansas City Chiefs 31-20. This is where the 49ers will look for revenge.
Opening Odds and Line Movement
Oddsmakers released opening odds, with the 49ers favored by 2.5 points. However, enough money and bets came on the Chiefs at +2.5, so many books dropped the 49ers to -1.5 and even -1 at some spots.
This makes for an exciting game knowing that the lines are tight. Still, San Francisco has a higher probability of winning right now.
San Francisco’s Second-Half Surge
The 49ers trailed the Lions, 24-7 at halftime in the NFC Championship Game. However, they stormed out of the locker room for the second half and added 27 unanswered points in the second half and escaped a home win against the Lions, 34-31.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell made some really aggressive decisions that will be second-guessed for years. He went for it multiple times on fourth down when he could’ve kicked a field goal to extend the lead. Instead, those four-down calls didn’t work a couple of times and gave the 49ers all of the momentum.
In reality, Andy Reid and the Chiefs won’t make those same bone-headed decisions and cost their team the game. The 49ers have taken advantage of the Packers and Lions, who couldn’t close out the game in the fourth quarter.
However, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs have shown time and time again that they can close. They’ve won multiple games on the road in the playoffs for the first time ever. People have doubted this group, and they just keep responding.
Therefore, I’ll take the Chiefs at +100 on the moneyline.

What About The Total?
I’m waiting for the 49ers to put together a full game. They didn’t against the Packers and absolutely didn’t against the Lions after a dreadful second half.
The 49ers have an incredible defense, but even that defense allowed 31 points to the Lions at home. If Jared Goff and the Lions can catch the 49ers off guard multiple times, so can the Chiefs. Plus, Brock Purdy hates being under pressure. He typically makes some really bad throws and awful reads when that happens.
Purdy even threw an interception over the middle of the field that led to more Detroit points in the first half. We also remember what he did against the Ravens earlier in the regular season when he threw four interceptions. Purdy came up big in the second half. But even Lamar Jackson looked weak against the Chiefs’ defensive schemes.
I don’t trust the 49ers’ offense against the Chiefs. They can’t fall multiple scores behind and then expect to come back against Kansas City. After all, the Ravens scored only 10 points and barely ran the ball on the Chiefs.
If the Niners don’t commit to the run early or have little success, it’ll be a long day for them as well. Let’s back the Under 47.5 (-110).
