2024 Texas Children’s Houston Open

March 28 – March 31 at Memorial Park Golf Course

Golf Course

After missing a year, the Houston Open is rescheduled from the fall to the last week in March on the PGA Tour and it returns to the Memorial Park Golf Course, a course that, despite being a municipal track, has garnered much praise from the PGA players in just three seasons on tour.

The course is a true championship test of skill as winning scores between 10 and 16 under par illustrate. A challenging par 70 over 7432 yards and once again the players will be on Bermuda grass greens, so not much adjustment for those in good nick with the putter.

The Tom Doak design is a hell of a test and why wouldn’t it be, having enlisted Brooks Koepka’s expertise in the redesign. The Renaissance Club used for the Scottish Open is probably Doak’s best-known design and is worth a look when considering course correlations this week.

Will It Be a Scottie Hat-Trick This Week?

The question on golf fans’ lips is whether Scottie Scheffler will start to dominate the sport.

It is certainly possible –now that he has found his mojo back with the flatstick– because his brilliant ball striking that has set him apart for a couple of years has now been complimented on the greens.

That elite ball-striking is starting to measure up to Tiger Woods’ statistics, so it is entirely feasible that golf is in for a period of dominance from the twenty-seven-year-old from New Jersey.

With two solid efforts at Memorial Park, Scheffler does look a very solid favorite this week at the Houston Open and yes, he is a good selection as a saver on your betting card this week.

Golf Pick: Scottie Scheffler to Win Outright (+300) at Bet365

Can Cole Hammer Shine in Houston?

With this year’s Houston Open not being a signature event on the PGA Tour, many of the top players are resting up. This means a start for the twenty-four-year-old local lad who excelled here in 2022 when finishing 27th.

2023 was a difficult one for Hammer on the Korn Ferry Tour, as he struggled to register a Top 20 finish. However, there have been encouraging signs recently that he is rolling back into form on that feeder tour with two of his last three tournaments being top 10 finishes.

To win this week’s event is possibly a step too far for Hammer, but a Top 20 finish is very much in his wheelhouse. The other bet we like for Cole Hammer this week is a first-round leader one with Bet365 (+20000) because, following his 27th here in 2022, he did take the first round lead the week after at the RSM Classic.

Will It Be Trainer Time in Houston?

Yes, this week in the Houston Open, Martin Trainer has a better-than-average long-shot chance at an event depleted of top names due to not being designated a signature title by the PGA Tour.

There is mounting evidence to suggest Martin Trainer is in the form of his life because, for the first time in many years, he has found real consistency.

Trainer has always been a dangerous player to discount, especially in South American events where his only PGA Tour win came down in Puerto Rico back in 2019. The thirty-four-year-old French American has also played well here in Houston previously when finishing 5th in 2021.

The consistent form that we detailed earlier has seen Trainer accumulate three Top 10 finishes in his last five events. We are trusting him to make it four this week along with a long-shot win in the outright market
