Buffalo Bills vs. Baltimore Ravens
Sunday, September 29, 2024 – 08:20 PM ET at M&T Bank Stadium
Buffalo Bills
After a 47-10 blowout win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Buffalo Bills are statistically the best team in football. The Bills are undefeated so far this season and look to be getting better every week. The Bills were a five-point home favorite against Jacksonville, and covered that spread with ease by scoring four touchdowns on their first four drives.
Quarterback Josh Allen is up there with Patrick Mahomes and is one of the most influential people in football. Allen looks nearly unstoppable so far this season and his ability to move the ball through the air or pick up yards on the ground even if his receivers are covered make him a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses.
The Bills defense was supposed to be a weakness this year but give credit to defensive-minded head coach Sean McDermott for the way that he has worked through injuries to make this unit look excellent. The Bills were depleted on defense when the season started yet they are playing excellent ball and McDermott has them all in position to make plays. This has been an excellent coaching job so far and behind the strength of McDermott’s teaching, the Bills are getting excellent play from above-average players.
Baltimore Ravens
After two close losses to start the season, the Ravens finally notched a victory in the win column when they visited Dallas this Sunday. Once again, the Ravens had problems holding on to the lead after jumping out to a 28-6 margin early on before Dallas rallied to make it a 28-25 final score.
The Ravens’ main weakness this year is the turnover on the offensive line. They lost four of their five starters in the offseason and they have yet to find continuity on the line, but it’s getting better each week. Derrick Henry ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Dallas. The Ravens are going to need that type of output from Henry if they’re going to compete this season.
The Ravens also lost elite defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald and are struggling to learn a new defense this season. They also lost excellent linebacker Patrick Queen to the Steelers. The Ravens are trying to make things work in spite of all these defections. This is one of the problems with having an elite high-paid quarterback, it is hard to keep the team around him. The Ravens are suffering through these growing pains and hope that the elite play of Lamar Jackson can overcome the fact that they’ve lost depth on both sides of the ball.
The Ravens are also struggling to get All-Pro TE Mark Andrews involved in the offense. The Ravens need Andrews to step up and become a threat, especially in 3rd down situations. Look for the Ravens to target Andrews early to open up their offense.
Key to the Game
The Buffalo Bills have been excellent against the run so far this season and Baltimore is going to have to attack them on the ground if they’re going to want to be successful. They’re going to need another big game from Derrick Henry if they’re going to have a chance to win this game.
We can expect that Josh Allen and the Bills will score so the Ravens are going to need to control the time of possession and move the ball on the ground in order to keep Allen and his high-flying cohorts on the sideline.
If the Ravens are able to run the ball, they can keep this game close. If the Bills shut down the Ravens run game, they should be in line for another easy victory.
The Pick
I don’t see how you can go against the Buffalo Bills right now. With the way Josh Allen is playing, I can’t see anyone being able to slow him down, especially a defense that is still learning their new assignments.
I do expect the Ravens to have some success on the ground but not the success that they enjoyed against Dallas last week. Buffalo will key in on the run and Baltimore will not be able to stop them enough on offense. The Bills will win this game.
