BMW Championship Preview: Caves Valley Gets Tougher

This week’s penultimate event of the season sees a return to the Caves Valley Golf Club. The track was used for the tournament back in 2021 when Patrick Cantlay beat Bryson DeChambeau in an exciting six-hole play-off.

Back then, the winning score was a very low 27-under par on the par-72 course. Interestingly, this year the course will play 150 yards longer with a reduced par of 70. This suggests the PGA Tour wants it to appear more challenging, though the fairways are already tight through the rolling parkland of Maryland, and the Bentgrass greens are smaller than average.

Tee-to-green accuracy will be key, along with length off the tee, given the changes made to the yardage and par for this year’s renewal.

Sungjae Im Props: Betting on a Korean Comeback at Caves Valley

Sungjae Im looks to have prime motivation and improved form as we head into the penultimate week of the FedEx Series.

The twenty-seven-year-old from South Korea arrives with his ranking at 25th. He needs a solid four days to lock up his participation in next week’s finale at East Lake for the top 30.

He will be buoyed by last week’s effort in Memphis, which was built on a solid week at the Wyndham Championship. Beforehand, Im has been struggling for his best form in the second half of the season; indeed, we must go back to April for his last top 10 on the PGA Tour at the Masters.

With five missed cuts since the Masters, the 27th at Wyndham and 17th at St. Jude indicate a player coming back to form. And there is no doubt that Caves Valley suits Sungjae Im. He was 3rd here in 2021, and this week’s course being back looks like perfect timing.

The recommendation is to bet at Caesars Sportsbook (check our Caesars Sportsbook Review) on Sungjae Im to be the Top Korean over his compatriot Si Woo Kim, along with a Top 10 finish.

Im’s Picks

  • Sungjae Im To Be Top Korean (-120)
  • Sungjae Im To Finish Top 10 (+300)

Hideki Matsuyama: Can the Japanese Star Finish Strong on Both Ends?

It’s been a solid injury-free year for the Japanese superstar Hideki Matsuyama.

Currently ranked at number 21 on the FedEx rankings, the thirty-three-year-old won the opening event of the year and now could win the penultimate one.

Interestingly, Matsuyama has failed to register a single Top 10 since his win in the opening Sentry Tournament of Champions. His consistency is reflected by eleven top 25 finishes, including a current run of four Top 20 finishes.

The lack of contending is a concern. However, it looks explainable through being poor off the tee on occasions. Despite this, Matsuyama’s iron play has been stellar throughout.

This leans towards a line of thinking that Hideki Matsuyama is due a hot week with the putter, and he has his favoured Bentgrass greens in Maryland to aid improvement in that department. Looking back to 2021 here at the course, Matsuyama fell away over the weekend after a bright start.

With his form trending in the right direction for a bet, Hideki Matsuyama looks tailor-made for this week’s test at Caves Valley Golf Course.

Matsuyama’s Picks

  • Hideki Matsuyama To Win BMW Championship (+4000)
  • Hideki Matsuyama To Finish Top 20 (-125)
