People can complain about the Los Angeles Dodgers spending millions of dollars to win a World Series and they accomplished it last season. But let’s give the New York Mets their due. Like the Dodgers, Mets ownership wants those same rings and after pushing Los Angeles to six games in the NLCS, they signed arguably the best young hitter in baseball, Juan Soto.
Spending large sums of money doesn’t guarantee you a championship, but spending less than the mean league average scale all but precludes you from having any real chance.
The Mets should be congratulated for trying. Let’s look at the Metropolitans’ chances and break it all down.
The Metropolitans Odds
At Bet365 (check our Bet365 Review), here are the preseason baseball odds on New York as of mid-March:
- New York Mets To Win World Series (+1000) (4th place overall)
- New York Mets To Win National League (+550) (3rd place overall)
- New York Mets To Win Division (+180) (2nd place overall)
It’s clear the Mets are a strong contender, but some oddities don’t add up.
The Mets are #4 in win total at 90.5, that fits. Yet to win the NL East, New York has the second-lowest odds, but for season wins they are behind favored Atlanta at 93.5 and Philadelphia at 91.5. Does that suggest more action on the Phillies to win games but not the division? A bit odd.

Metropolitans Batting
MLB.com released a new written product called Morning Lineup and one topic discussed is the Top 10 batting orders by their methodology.
Last season, the Mets were #7 in scoring in the Majors. With the addition of Soto, they are projecting the Blue and Orange to have the second-best lineup card behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Here is the forecasted batting order:
- Francisco Lindor, SS
- Juan Soto, RF
- Pete Alonso, 1B
- Brandon Nimmo, LF
- Mark Vientos, 3B
- Jesse Winker, DH
- Francisco Alvarez, C
- Jeff McNeil, 2B
- Jose Siri, CF
Note, this is not from the desk of Mets manager Carlos Mendoza, just one person’s opinion. The top three hitters are as good as any in baseball and the middle three don’t receive enough publicity but are very efficient.
Being a Mets fan or bettor could be a lot of fun watching this offense.
Metropolitans Starting Pitching
New York will start the season with two starters on the shelf. They are Sean Manaea (oblique) and Sean Manaea (lat).
Kodai Senga will be at the top of the rotation after making two starts in the postseason and one in the regular season because of an injury in 2024. His cutter and “ghost” forkball have a great deal of movement. It’s just a matter of him holding up.
David Peterson was a terrific #5 starter with superior results compared to what you think you are seeing. More than a few in the wagering community are convinced the lefty returns to career norms or worse.
That leaves former Yankees close Clay Holmes to join the rotation in a grand experiment. Holmes has four MLB starts to his name, the last in 2018. The Mets like his sinker and he’s added a changeup and the mission is five innings per start for 2025.
Possible innings eaters Paul Blackburn and Canning Griffin are currently in the mix, but if they weren’t effective with the Athletics and Angels respectively, can they realistically help you reach the Fall Classic?
Metropolitans Bullpen
Edwin Diaz is the closer and his stuff can be electric. On several occasions last year, the right-hander had a poor mental approach coming out of the bullpen, walked a leadoff hitter and immediately got into trouble.
The rest of the pen is adequate but lacks swing-and-miss types, allowing too much contact.
Metropolitans Prognosis
The question coming in is who are the Mets? Are they the lackluster contingent that started 29-37? Or were they just underachieving and more like the crew that was 61-36 and played for the NL championship?
With a dynamic lineup, an ordinary-looking starting staff, having a possible upside and above above-average bullpen, maybe they can recreate last year. But presently, the Dodgers, Atlanta, and Philadelphia all seem to be better (the latter two by a small margin) and we’ll say New York comes up short to reach the World Series.
