The AI Model has the Nationals earning a 5-3 road victory over the Oakland Athletics. While Oakland has started the season off 5-8, many baseball experts don’t believe it’ll last. The AI Model also believes this to be true. The Model has the Nationals winning against the Athletics despite Washington being underdogs at +110.
Pitching Matchup
The Nationals will pitch Jake Irvin for tonight’s matchup against the Athletics. Irvin has only walked 4.7% of batters this season. He’s also induced 43.8% of grounders and has allowed just 18.8% of fly balls.
While his strikeouts are down and his ISO and wOBA are up, there’s reason to believe that he can pitch better. That said, the Athletics’ projected lineup has struck out 25.5% of the time against righties since last season, and the lineup only has two real threats, Abraham Toro and Zack Gelof, who get on base at a high rate.
Concerns for the Athletics
On the other hand, it’ll be Paul Blackburn for the Athletics. He’s been holding it down for Oakland this season. Despite a low strikeout rate, he’s allowed just a .022 ISO and wOBA of .136 to 47 batters.
That’s just not sustainable. He gave up a wOBA of .346 last season and allowed 29.4% of line drives. When he starts to allow these kinds of numbers again, the Nationals will take advantage and win the game outright.
