The three land-based casinos in Michigan collectively generated a slight revenue increase ahead of what they did in April, although not all three experienced a revenue hike.
Gaming Hits the Mark in May
It wasn’t much of an increase, but enough to make analysts optimistic that the Wolverine State will at least reach its revenue target from last year. May saw the three land-based casinos generate 3% more revenue than they did in April, which means that the target for yearly revenue of 2024’s $1.29 billion is in the crosshairs.
The trio of Detroit casinos delivered $112.7 million in casino revenue in May, with an additional $1.3 million generated by retail sports betting, bringing the total to approximately $114 million in gross revenues for the month. This combined figure was up 1.2% from May 2024, but the relatively paltry take from sports betting was 36.1% less than last year’s figures.
MGM Grand Detroit was the clear leader of the three, producing $53.1 million in revenue for May, up 2% year-over-year. The downtown Detroit casino was responsible for 47% of the revenue generated by the three casinos, followed by MotorCity Casino’s $33.9 million in monthly revenues, a small increase of 0.6% ahead of May 2024.
However, Hollywood Casino at Greektown showed a mild year-over-year decline to $25.7 million in May revenues, which was down 0.2% from last May.
Sportsbooks Go Cold
As for sports betting at the retail establishments, the news was not good, as the three casinos generated just $1.3 million in May, which was a precipitous plunge of over 36% from May 2024. MGM Detroit, the big winner in casino gaming revenue, was lackluster in the sports betting department as it posted just $72,060 in sports betting revenue for the month, a startling 86.1% decrease from last year.
Despite the solid floor gaming numbers, the industry has yet to rebound to pre-COVID levels, where it achieved a yearly revenue high-water mark of $1.45 billion in annual revenue for 2019. It should be noted that Michigan’s casino gaming revenue surpassed $1.3 billion from 2005 to 2019 but has yet to do the same since COVID.
Push Gaming Partners With BetMGM
Michigan’s online casino players who use the BetMGM app will see its platform bolstered with titles from Push Gaming. The European gaming developer will see its popular titles integrated into BetMGM’s iGaming platform, with titles like Big Bamboo and 10 Flaming Bisons.
This will enhance the popular titles developed by BetMGM’s software developers, who are responsible for titles such as MGM Grand Gamble, MGM Emerald Nights, and Bellagio Diamonds, and will work in concert with the new team from Push.
Andy Bentley is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Push Gaming and said, “This launch is more than just a milestone. It’s a strategic step towards establishing Push Gaming as a market leader in North America. By building on our strong collaboration with BetMGM and delivering standout content, we’re confident we can grow a loyal and engaged player base in the US.”
MGM Resorts International, the parent company of BetMGM, purchased Push Gaming through its European iGaming operator, LeoVegas, in May 2023, with a merging of the technologies in mind.
