NBA 2024 Championship Odds: Celtics, Nuggets Still Favorites but Knicks & T’Wolves Offer Value

Two of the biggest headlines heading into the Play-In Tournament and the NBA Playoffs revolve around the health of Joel Embiid and Giannis Antetokounmpo. Embiid is back with the Philadelphia 76ers, despite not having played on Sunday.

However, Antetokounmpo is considered “a real doubt”, with 6 days still to go before the Bucks take the court against the Pacers in the first round of the playoffs.

The 76ers struggled without Embiid but managed to stay in playoff contention during his absence. Now that he’s back, the 76ers can make a massive run for the NBA Championship despite ending up as the 7th seed. Still, they could make it difficult for the Knicks (#2) or the Celtics (#1), depending on how their tourney goes.

Complicating Things

Meanwhile, the Bucks will face Indiana, as mentioned before. However, some alarms are ringing in Milwaukee, after some uncharacteristic losses down the final stretch that even prompted Doc Rivers to publicly call out his team. Losing to the Magic on Sunday sure didn’t help the cause… or the seeding for that matter. With the result, the Knicks were able to leapfrog the Bucks, after beating Chicago in overtime.

As for the West Coast, we’ll dive into more details below but it’s worth noting that the Lakers and Warriors managed to sneak into the Play-In Tournament as the 8th and 9th seed after stringing together a series of victories in the last couple of weeks of the season.

With that said, here’s a look at the updated 2024 NBA Championship odds as well as some basic information for the Play-In Tournament and first-round matchups.

If you want more analysis on this subject, check out our YouTube video with a breakdown from expert capper Jefe Picks back in the first week of April. While you won’t find the Celtics at +190 anymore, the Clippers are paying almost double now.

OddsTrader’s Betting Edge

  • After losing to Orlando on the last day of the regular season, the Bucks went from a potential matchup against either the Magic or a 7/8 seed, to facing the up-and-coming Pacers.
  • As a reminder, the 1-6 seeds will automatically make it into the NBA Playoffs. However, the 7-10 teams in each conference will be featured in a Play-In Tournament to decide seeds 7 and 8.
  • Once the Play-In Tournament is finished, the two teams that move on in each conference will ultimately earn the No. 7 and No. 8 seeds. The Playoffs will then play out like your typical tournament with 1 playing 8 and 2 playing 7, etc.

The Boston Celtics dominated the NBA this season and clinched the #1 seed ahead of the Milwaukee Bucks in the Eastern Conference. Actually, the Bucks (one of the preseason favorites) fell to the third seed after losing to Orlando on the last day of the regular season and getting leapfrogged by the Knicks. NBA fans would be shocked if the Celtics didn’t win it all. They’ve already got an implied probability greater than 50% to win the Eastern Conference.

Boston will have home-court advantage against one of the following four teams, depending on how the Play-in Tournament plays out (pun intended).

But if you’re looking for another team, not the Celtics, consider the New York Knicks. The Knicks have great value at +2800 to win the Eastern Conference and had some big games against the Cavaliers and Bucks earlier this season.

I’d also think about the Philadelphia 76ers. With Joel Embiid, the 76ers are no easy out. While Philadelphia typically chokes later in the playoffs, maybe this year will be different. They’ve got a refreshed Joel Embiid, who is ultimately the best player in the NBA… when healthy.

Meanwhile, don’t forget about the Indiana Pacers, who already won the Eastern Conference during the In-Season Tournament. There’s also the Miami Heat, who found their way into the NBA Finals last season after having to play in the Play-In Tournament. The same could happen this year… if they do beat the 76ers on Tuesday.

West Conference

Below, you will find the updated odds to win the Western Conference for each of the ten Western Conference squads that have made the postseason.

Nuggets +120 Suns +850 Warriors +3000
Clippers +650 Timberwolves +900 Pelicans +4000
Thunder +650 Lakers +1400 Kings +12,500
Mavericks +650
*Odds from Caesars Sportsbook

The Denver Nuggets were tied with the Minnesota Timberwolves for the best record in the Western Conference with one week remaining. However, by Sunday morning there was a three-way tie at the top of the Western Conference as the youngsters from Oklahoma City snatched the #1 seed… with a little help from the Mavericks. But that’s a different story.

As we head into the NBA Playoffs, the Thunder have +1600 odds, Minnesota +2000 and the Nuggets have +135 odds to win the West.

Minnesota hasn’t had Karl-Anthony Towns available, but he will likely return for the playoffs. The T’Wolves are terrific at home and have gone 12-3 in divisional play. The Timberwolves also led the Western Conference with 37 wins in conference play. The Nuggets only have 30 wins against Western Conference opponents, while the Thunder have won 33 games against Western Conference opponents.

The Timberwolves have the best value in the Western Conference. However, you can also consider backing the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks are very streaky. They’ll win a lot and then lose a lot. But if this team starts to win a lot in the playoffs, the Mavericks could be a really tough out, especially as they’ve gotten better defensively.

Meanwhile, the Thunder are an intriguing pick. It’s just unlikely that a team of many young players can get through this type of gauntlet. And there’s also nothing wrong with taking a chance with the Lakers and Warriors. Both teams will have to play in the Play-In Tournament first, but with LeBron James and Steph Curry, you can never rule out those teams. They’re clutch in these types of moments and typically lead their teams to greatness.
