NFL Preseason Top Picks for August 9: Teams With Depth Usually Win!

Green Bay Packers v Chicago Bears

There is a ton of NFL preseason action throughout the day! I looked over some of the later games and added some best NFL bets for today’s slate. Ultimately, there’s plenty of value on the board for preseason play. We just got to dig in before heading to the top-rated sportsbooks.

New York Jets vs. Green Bay Packers

Saturday, August 09, 2025 – 08:00 PM EDT at Lambeau Field

The Jets have a whole new regime with their staff this year. They’ll try something different and have already acknowledged that they’ll play their starters to start tonight’s game against the Packers. Meanwhile, the Packers will likely do the same, although it’s unclear how long either team will keep its starters out there for.

That said, the Packers certainly have more depth on the roster heading into this game.

The Packers Are Deeper

The Green Bay Packers are heading into this game as the deeper team. They’ve built this team for years under Matt LaFleur, and it usually shows in preseason and late in the season.

For example, the Packers have Mecole Hardman as the 7th wide receiver. Malik Heath, a notable receiver, is another third-stringer. The Jets don’t have that kind of depth at wide receiver.

Plus, who would you trust to start the game? Jordan Love and the Packers’ offense or the Jets with a struggling Justin Fields?

Let’s ride with the Packers at -3.5 while priced around -110 at Caesars Sportsbook.

Kansas City Chiefs vs. Arizona Cardinals

Saturday, August 09, 2025 – 08:00 PM EDT at State Farm Stadium

This is becoming a trend in the NFL.

Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs’ starters will likely play a quarter before the backups come in. Gardner Minshew might get some reps with his new team, but it’s very likely Bailey Zappe concludes the game for the Chiefs.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals will do the same, but it’ll likely be Clayton Tune finishing up the game. If this game comes down to the wire, I’d trust Zappe more than Tune.

Evaluation Over Risk?

The Arizona Cardinals are looking forward to evaluating their players instead of managing risk. It’s probably a necessary step for the Cardinals. After all, they’ve been one of the worst teams in the NFL for a little while now.

The Cardinals have a pretty weak roster offensively. The scary thing is that they didn’t replace a single offensive starting position from last year.

That doesn’t make you feel too great.

Meanwhile, the Chiefs know how to win. They also know how to evaluate and get the most out of their players. I’m taking the Chiefs at -3 here.

Denver Broncos vs. San Francisco 49ers

Saturday, August 09, 2025 – 08:30 PM EDT at Levi’s Stadium

The final game of the night will be the Broncos against the 49ers. It sounds like the Broncos do plan to play their starters, but it will likely be short-lived. Still, that’s better than the 49ers’ plan, which is to not play many starters at all in tonight’s game.

With Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger as backups, the Broncos have some sneaky depth at quarterback.

Don’t Sleep On Denver!

The Broncos were a bit of a surprise last season behind Bo Nix. That trajectory will likely continue into this year.

The Broncos added Evan Engram at tight end and brought in J.K. Dobbins at running back. They’re also super high on RJ Harvey and have five running backs on the roster that have serious potential.

Conversely, the 49ers will give Mac Jones another chance to shine. He struggled during his time with the Patriots, but the pressure is off his shoulders. The 49ers are happy with what they’ve seen out of Jones, but eventually, they’ll have to use Carter Bradley at quarterback late in the game. That’s not going to cut it.

Let’s rock with the Broncos at -6.5. You’d be surprised by the depth that the Broncos have this year.
