NHL Computer Picks for May 24-25: Hurricanes On The Back Foot

The Carolina Hurricanes have left themselves in a very difficult position as they now trail the Florida Panthers 2-0 in the series and face the prospect of back-to-back games in Florida.

Elsewhere, tomorrow we have another NHL playoff game taking place between the Edmonton Oilers and the Dallas Stars. With the series tied at 1-1, it’s still all to play for as the Dallas Stars head to Canada for back-to-back games.

Let’s take a look at what our computers have to say.

The Picks

  • Panthers -1.5 (+180)
  • Stars-Oilers Over 5.5 (-125)

Carolina Hurricanes vs. Florida Panthers

Saturday, May 24, 2025 – 08:00 PM EDT at Amerant Bank Arena

Too Little Too Late

The Carolina Hurricanes have a massive mountain to climb if they wish to advance to the Stanley Cup final, and even more so because they face the defending Stanley Cup champions on the road in the next two games.

Should the Panthers advance into the finals, it will be their 3rd season in a row to make it to the finals, having finished runner-up in 2023, they lifted the trophy in 2024. With the Hockey they are playing thus far throughout the playoffs, it’s hard to see them not advancing into the finals with a 2-0 series lead and back-to-back home games to come.

Florida’s style of hockey is built for the playoffs, and they have proven it yet again, having allowed just 2.21 goals per game (the least of all the remaining teams), and they have also scored the most goals per game with 3.9 (the most of all the remaining teams). They have also won 10 of their 14 postseason games.

Florida & Carolina Trends & Facts

  • Carolina is 1-4 in its last 5 games when playing on the road against Florida.
  • The total has gone under in 5 of Florida’s last 7 games against Carolina.
  • The total has gone under in 4 of Carolina’s last 5 games on the road.

The Pick

The Panthers are 3-2 thus far on home ice throughout the playoffs while the Hurricanes are 3-2 on the road, but with that being said, it’s hard to imagine the Hurricanes can win two games in a row against this Panthers team and at the very least the Panthers should end this home stint with a 3-1 series lead.

Our computer is predicting a 4-2 Florida victory, and we really like this prediction as we were looking to take the Panthers to cover the -1.5 PK line at +180 NHL betting odds. This is very high in our opinion, and we would happily bet the -1.5 PK line down to as low as +140.

NHL Pick: Panthers -1.5 (+180) at Bet365

Dallas Stars vs. Edmonton Oilers

Sunday, May 25, 2025 – 03:00 PM EDT at Rogers Place

Edmonton Shutout Dallas

The Dallas Stars had no answer in Game Two as the Oilers suffocated them offensively, allowing the Stars just 25 shots throughout the game (the Oilers also only had 25 shots on net).

An early powerplay goal in the first period and two quickfire goals in the middle of the 2nd period saw the Oilers take a 3-0 lead, and the game ended that way with the Oilers’ 3rd shutout of the post-season.

It’s all to play for with the series tied 1-1. Don’t be surprised to see this sitting at 2-2 come to the end of the two games played at Rogers Place.

Dallas & Edmonton Trends & Facts

  • The total has gone under in 4 of Dallas’ last 5 games.
  • Edmonton is 9-2 in its last 11 games.
  • The total has gone over in 5 of Dallas’ last 6 games when playing on the road against Edmonton.

The Pick

Despite the under hitting in 4 of the Stars’ previous 5 games, the sportsbooks are in agreement with us here that this game has the potential to go over as they have the line juiced to -125 for over 5.5 goals.

Game One of this series saw 9 goals scored, and despite the 3-0 scoreline last time out to the Oilers, back on home ice we feel this will open the game right up and we should see five goals tonight at the very least with our computer predicting a 4-3 victory for the Dallas Stars.

On home ice throughout this season’s playoffs, the Oilers’ home games have seen an eye-watering average of 6.6 goals per game. The Stars will be determined to bring their offense, having been shut out last time.

NHL Pick: Over 5.5 (-125) at Bet365
