USFL Week 3 Results

Birmingham Stallions 22, New Orleans Breakers 13

The USFL powerhouse, the New Orleans Breakers, finally met defeat. It had to happen at some point. The Birmingham Stallions have quickly gelled and have become the first team to reach 3-0.

This was a close game regardless of the nine-point difference. New Orleans led until the eight-minute mark in the fourth quarter, so they were just a blink away from continuing their own undefeated trek.

Two key mistakes from Kyle Sloter, a fumble in the endzone that went for a safety and an interception, ended any comeback hopes.

Birmingham has enough offensive playmaking and some real defensive stars they rely on. These are the two best teams in the league.

Tampa Bay Bandits 26, Houston Gamblers 25

It’s a shame this game was played during the NFL Draft. Houston has continued to show poor second-half tendencies.

They led 23-14 at halftime but crumbled in the fourth quarter. They scored just two points off safety in the second half.

Houston has to figure out why their offense bogs down late in games. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay did well to rally after a poor defensive effort early on. Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu proved to be the perfect dual-threat as time was winding down.

Ta’amu showed why he was considered the most talented quarterback prior to the season. He’s been challenged for that claim, but his 33-yard run with 13 seconds left to set up the winning field goal. That’s the clutch play Tampa Bay needs.

Michigan Panthers 24, Pittsburgh Maulers 0

It’s safe to assume this battle of the winless teams clearly established Pittsburgh as the USFL‘s worst team.

Michigan could barely put together scoring drives in the first two weeks, ruining what was a set of stellar defensive performances. But Shea Patterson couldn’t find sustained success.

Neither Patterson nor backup Paxton Lynch were any good in this one but it didn’t matter. The Panthers won the trench battle and pulverized the Maulers’ defensive front.

This has been a continued issue for Kirby Wilson’s bunch. Pittsburgh simply can’t get anything going.

Their passing game lacks separation and the run game isn’t featuring a powerful enough offensive line. This team might go winless with their current level of trench play.

New Jersey Generals 24, Philadelphia Stars 16

Another comeback win in Week 3, the New Jersey Generals are quite impressive. Quarterback De’Andre Johnson has the knack for dramatic flair. He helped lead the fourth-quarter surge with 94 total rushing yards and a touchdown.

The Generals boast a dominant ground game, and Johnson’s powerful arm forces the defense to respect him in the pocket. This team is a close loss in Week 1 away from being undefeated.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia is a good but limited offensive team. Their unsettled quarterback situation has muddied their consistency. They ran for only 31 yards, and passers Case Cookus and Bryan Scott split time.

Scott should be the starter full-time but hasn’t quite grabbed the job with force yet.
