The WNBA season is heading towards the finish line and these teams are making the final push to solidify their playoff position. Every game matters at this point of the season.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at tonight’s matchups to find winning WNBA picks.
Indiana Fever vs. Phoenix Mercury
Thursday, August 07, 2025 – 10:00 PM EDT at PHX Arena
Fever Look to Close the Gap
Currently, the Phoenix Mercury are sitting in fourth place with a record of 18-11. Hot on their heels is the Indiana Fever at 17-13. The Fever have a chance to close that gap tonight when they travel to Phoenix. Will the Fever get a much-needed win, or can the Mercury put some more space between themselves and the upstarts from Indiana?
Phoenix enters this game on a two-game winning streak and winners of three of their last five games. They are 10-4 at home this year and they have a point differential +2.9 on the year. The Mercury are led by Satou Sabally who averages 17.5 points and 6.6 rebounds per game . The recent win streak comes on the heels of a tough July where they finished as losers as four of the last five games. Yet the Mercury turned things around just in time to make a strong playoff push.
The Indiana Fever are currently the most high profile team in the league due to the fact that they have Caitlin Clark on their team. Clark not only dominates the media headlines but she leads the team in assists with 8.8 assists. Clark’s exciting play and magnetic personality have made her the most popular player in the league, but that has also made her controversial. Clark is a polarizing figure who dominates the media coverage of the league.
The Fever come into the game with the record of 8-7 on the road. This is quite impressive. They’ve also been playing well as they won seven of their last 10 games. Fatigue could be an issue for the Fever however as they are immersed in a road trip.
Triple-Double Trouble in Phoenix
This will be their fourth consecutive road game. The Fever’s most recent game was a 100-91 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks. In that game, the Fever were missing Caitlin Clark who has been out for 8 straight games with a groin injury. The loss ended a five-game winning streak for Indiana. I do not expect Clark to play for the team tonight, but they have shown that they can get wins even without Clark. The timetable for Clark’s return is August 12th, according to ESPN.
So, how did the Fever keep winning without their top player? Kelsey Mitchell is a huge part of this. Mitchell averages 20 points per game. Mitchell did her best in the Fever’s most recent loss scoring 34 points including seven three pointers.
Mitchell was not alone though, as Natasha Howard and Aliyah Boston have been playing excellent. Boston had a streak of six straight double doubles until she fell just a bit short against the Sparks with 15 points and nine rebounds. This will be the Fever’s final game on the road trip.
The Phoenix Mercury are led by Alyssa Thomas who is a well-rounded player. Thomas averages 15.8 points. 9.1 assists, and 8.6 rebounds per game. Thomas can do it all. Thomas had her second straight triple double in an 82-66 win over the Connecticut Sun on Tuesday night.
No Clark, No Problem?
Thomas had 13 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists in the win. Thomas has the most triple-doubles in the history of the WNBA. Thomas has had 14 career triple doubles. The next highest active player is Sabrina Ionescu ,who has had four. Can Thomas get another triple double tonight? If so, the Mercury will probably get the win over the Fever.
The Mercury are currently 5-point favorites and that makes sense when you look at the potential fatigue that the Indiana Fever are carrying. The Mercury would have covered this point spread in five of their last six victories. The Mercury fell to the Indiana Fever 107-101 on July 30th in Indiana.
In that game, Aari McDonald had a career high 27 points and Aliyah Boston had 22 points and 12 rebounds. Boston scored 14 straight points to open the 4th quarter in the win. Can the Mercury slow down Boston tonight or will the Fever get another win that would mean so much for the team in the standings?
The Indiana Fever can keep this game close. The Fever match up well with the Mercury and in spite of missing Caitlin Clark, the Fever have been playing excellent basketball as of late.
Sometimes a team does better without their star player and the Fever are proof of that. Take the Fever tonight at BetMGM (check our BetMGM Review).
