NCAAF Best Bets for Week 5: Texas Tech and Florida State Carry Great Value

A couple of crucial games in the Big 12 and ACC are where the best NCAAF picks can be found on the Week 5 college football betting schedule.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Kansas State Wildcats

Saturday, October 1, 2022 – 12:00 PM EDT at Bill Snyder Family Stadium

It’s a double letdown situation in the quaint little town of Manhattan where the Kansas State Wildcats host the Texas Tech Red Raiders in a key Big 12 battle between a couple of teams coming off upsets of rivals a week ago.

In one of the early games on the first Saturday of October, Kansas State is drawing the home chalk from the top online sportsbooks, most of which are selling the Wildcats on a -7½ spread with 57½ for the scoreboard target.

Tech Wrecks Longhorns and ‘Cats Stun Sooners

Just when it looked like the Texas Longhorns might be gaining momentum in the Big 12 race, the Red Raiders rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to beat their rivals from Austin 37-34 in overtime as touchdown underdogs.

In what is becoming something of a regular occurrence, Kansas State went down to Norman to administer a 41-34 upset of Oklahoma, a game in which the Sooners were nearly 2-TD favorites only to fall behind 14-0 to Adrian Martinez and the Wildcats and never really recover.

K-State on a 6-Game Run in Series

Even though this rivalry goes back about 90 years, the Red Raiders and Wildcats have only been getting together regularly in the last quarter century or so, and it has been all Kansas State recently with six consecutive wins to build a 13-9 lead in the rivalry.

There really haven’t been any runaway wins during Kansas State’s win streak, and the college football odds over the last few years reflect how evenly matched the two sides are, like last season’s game in Lubbock that saw the Wildcats’ 25-24 victory push most bets.

Another Close Game in the Offing

A sunny day with temps in the mid-70s at kickoff is what the weatherman is promising, and it’s important to keep in mind the kickoff will come at 12:00 PM local time after Kansas State coach Chris Klieman opted for the early boot when ESPN and FOX passed on the broadcast.

We’ll have contrasting styles between the two offenses, with Texas Tech currently third in the country moving the ball through the air and Kansas State seventh in rushing yards, so a high-scoring contest is possible.

Whether it’s a scoreboard buster or more defensive in nature, the best bet here is to take the points and roll with the Red Raiders.

NCAAF Pick: Texas Tech +7½ (-110) at BetMGM

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Florida State Seminoles

Saturday, October 01, 2022 – 03:30 PM EDT at Doak Campbell Stadium

While the major networks declined to cover the Big 12 matchup in Manhattan, ABC was quick to claim this ACC contest between ranked teams on the Week 5 college football betting schedule as the Wake Forest Demon Deacons travel to meet the Florida State Seminoles.

‘Noles Seeking First 5-0 Start Since 2015

Wake Forest dipped in the polls this week, but Dave Clawson and the Demon Deacons have no reason to hang their heads after pushing No. 5 Clemson to double overtime before dropping a 51-45 decision as touchdown underdogs.

Mike Norvell and Florida State sit just a rung behind Wake Forest in both polls and are off to a 2-0 start in Atlantic Coast Conference play after a 44-14 thrashing of Boston College last weekend that covered an 18½-point spread with plenty of room to spare.

Wake Has Won Last 2 Meetings

Saturday’s skirmish marks the 40th time for the two schools to collide on a gridiron, and Florida State owns a commanding 30-8-1 lead in the rivalry though Wake Forest has come out on top in the last two matchups.

Each of the last two contests took place in Winston-Salem, the Demon Deacons posting a solid 35-14 decision last year that more than covered a 4½-point spread, and each of the last seven games have come up short of the totals on the NCAAF odds.

How Will Hurricane Ian Affect the Game?

One way or another, Tallahassee is going to experience Hurricane Ian. Forecasters are presently calling for most of the rain to occur Friday, then linger into Saturday morning and afternoon, and that will at the very least affect Wake Forest’s travel plans.

Right now, everything is still a go with Florida State favored by a touchdown and most outlets carrying 65½ for the total. The tough loss by Wake Forest a week ago will linger into this matchup just like the rain from Hurricane Ian, and that makes it an easy call on the Seminoles.

NCAAF Pick: Florida State -7 (-110) at BetMGM
