Using our OddsTrader computer picks we were able to place tonight’s NHL bets based on the information generated. With five games on today’s NHL slate, we have narrowed down our computer’s two best picks to bring you our most confident selections based on the predicted scores.
Firstly we take a look at a possible high-scoring affair in Pittsburgh while the Edmonton Oilers are expected to win easily on home ice.
Senators vs. Penguins: Over 6.5 (-125) at BetRivers
Sharks vs. Oilers: Oilers -1.5 (-130) at Bet365
Ottawa Senators vs. Pittsburgh Penguins
Monday, March 20, 2023 – 07:00 PM EDT at PPG Paints Arena
Ottawa Winless in Six
The 33-36 Ottawa Senators are now on a 0-6 winless streak which has seen them fall below a positive winning record for the season. This bad run of form has essentially ruined their chances of making the playoffs as a Wild Card spot is their best option right now.
Even that is almost impossible as they trail tonight’s opponents by seven points for that position, at the very least they MUST win tonight, or it’s game over for the Senators making this year’s playoffs. Despite scoring 3/4/4 goals in their previous three losses, the Senators only managed 1/2/0 goals in their prior three losses.
Penguins’ Playoff Position in Jeopardy
Losing to the Montreal Canadiens and then back-to-back losses against the N.Y. Rangers now sees the Pittsburgh Penguins just barely hanging onto the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. The Florida Panthers are hot on their tail, trailing the Penguins by just one point. This is a must-win game for the Penguins if they wish to keep the Panthers at arm’s length.
Elsewhere Pittsburgh has been shockingly bad this season at covering the spread and with a 29-40 record it is ranked as the fourth worst in the NHL right now.
The Senators have shown lately they are back scoring goals but just can’t keep the puck out of the net as they have now conceded 5.1 goals on average in their previous five NHL games.
Combined these two teams have scored 6.35 goals per game and have allowed 6.65, ironically both sitting beside each other in the stats table with the Penguins having scored the 16th-most and Senators the 17th-most in the NHL this season. Defensively the Senators allow the 14th-most goals and the Penguins the 15th-most.
Our computer predicts this game to end on seven goals and we are more than happy to lay the -125 juice on the over 6.5 here as two poor defensive teams come head-to-head in this must-win game for both franchises. Seven of the Penguins’ previous 10 home games have witnessed 7+ goals scored and four of the previous five meetings between these teams in Pittsburgh have produced over 6.5 goals.
Score Prediction: Senators 3 – Penguins 4
NHL Pick: Over 6.5 (-125) at BetRivers
San Jose Sharks vs. Edmonton Oilers
Monday, March 20, 2023 – 09:30 PM EDT at Rogers Place
San Jose Can’t Buy a Win
Although we have long known this isn’t a playoff team, things have gone downhill quite quickly for San Jose these past few weeks. They traded away top goalscorer Timo Meier to the New Jersey Devils and are now 2-13 across their previous 15 NHL games. They are currently sitting bottom of the Western Conference with a 19-51 overall record, producing a -33% ROI and -24 units on the moneyline.
Edmonton Finishing Strong
The Oilers have finally started to get some consistency into their game and have now won 7 of their previous 9 games as well as being currently on a 3-0 winning streak.
Edmonton now finds themselves only six points shy of the top team in the Western Conference and while there might not be many games left to try and win the conference, they can most certainly make a push for a higher finishing position in the table, trailing second by only four points.
The Oilers’ recent run has now seen them almost turn into a profitable team this season having now produced just -0.7 units on the moneyline.
The Oilers are the top goalscorer’s in the entire NHL producing 3.91 goals per game, while their opponents San Jose allow the third-most amount per game with 3.76. This is a matchup between the best offense in the league and one of the worst defenses, that has now lost their top goalscorer in what was already a mediocre attack.
Our computer is conservatively predicting a 4-2 win for the home team but we believe they could win by more and therefore we are happy to lay the -130 NHL odds on the Oilers to cover the spread. Edmonton has covered the -1.5 PK line in all six of their previous home wins.
Score Prediction: Sharks 2 – Oilers 4
NHL Pick: Oilers -1.5 (-130) at Bet365
