Tonight’s matchup between the Colorado Avalanche and Pittsburgh Penguins is one of many on today’s NHL card but this is most definitely the best game on the board tonight. Here is what our computer is predicting in this game between two underachieving NHL franchises.

Colorado Avalanche vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

Tuesday, February 07, 2023 – 07:00 PM EST at PPG Paints Arena

Game Preview

Colorado Avalanche

Despite winning 7 of their previous 8 games, the Colorado Avalanche had gone 1-7 prior to their strong run of form. Luckily for the Avalanche, they reside in the much weaker Western Conference, which means despite sitting in 9th overall, they are only 8 points behind second-placed Winnipeg and have played four games less.

Colorado has been strong defensively this season, allowing only 2.73 goals per game, but their offense has been struggling with just the 19th-best in the league. Which is certainly too low to think of a repeat Stanley Cup victory.

However, they have been banging in an average of 4.13 goals across their previous 8 games and the push to get back into the playoff race seems well and truly underway.

Pittsburgh Penguins

As we stated, both these teams are level with 57 points on the board. Although the Penguins are in 8th place overall in the Eastern Conference, they find themselves a whopping 19 points behind 2nd place Carolina. That’s a big difference compared to Colorado’s eight.

The Penguins have been incredibly poor as of late, winning just 4 of their previous 6 games. They have allowed their opponents to score an average of 3.5 goals across those ten games.

Pittsburgh simply allows too many scoring chances to their opponents, with the 7th most shots against them this season in the entire league. They also have to play more games than many of those worse-off teams, meaning when they catch up on games, they could be ranked as one of the bottom four in terms of shots against if they don’t up their defensive effort.

It’s okay to allow some goals and try to outscore your opponent, but allowing almost four goals per game is always going to be a difficult task when looking to advance further up the table, as its almost impossible to score an average of 4/5 goals every night in order to stand a chance of winning.

The Pick

Our computer pick is siding with a low-scoring affair between these two teams, and there seems to be some nice value available when betting on the under 6.5 goals line at only -110 with BetMGM. This seems like a nice set of betting odds given our computers’ 3-2 predicted scoreline.

Colorado has seen the most under 6.5 games on the road this season as 73% of their games have seen six or less goals scored. Colorado has allowed only 2.73 goals per game, which is the 9th best in the NHL this season.

This is both teams’ first game back post all-star break. There could be some rustiness from both teams tonight and with both teams priced up at -110 to win, we believe taking the under here to be the best pick.

Score Prediction: Colorado Avalanche 3 – Pittsburgh Penguins 2

NHL Pick: Under 6.5 Goals (-110) at BetMGM
