Boston Bruins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs

Wednesday, February 01, 2023 – 07:30 PM EST at Scotiabank Arena

Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins can’t complain about a whole lot having run away with the Eastern Conference during the first half of the season, but that said, they won’t be happy having gone 0-3 in the run-up to the All-Star break and are now 7 points clear of second place in the Eastern Conference.

Their three defeats did come at the hands of some strong teams as they were beaten by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Carolina Hurricanes, and Florida Panthers. All three games were away from home as it tonight’s matchup against Toronto.

The Bruins are atop of almost all the stat sheets including having only allowed a ridiculously low 2.12 goals per game and 23 goals less than the second-best Dallas Stars. Both themselves and the Edmonton Oilers have scored a joint 187 goals which is the highest in the NHL.

Linus Ullmark Makes the Difference

Having such a deep roster with so many reliable players has been one of the keys to success for the Bruins as they have had nine players score 30+ points but the remarkable performances of goaltender Linus Ullmark have been the game-changer.

Ullmark has allowed only 1.9 goals per game with a save percentage sitting at .936 having gone 25-4-1 overall. Jeremy Swayman has put in a solid performance also with a record of 12-3-4 and allows 2.34 goals per game, which is still ranked as the 6th best in the NHL.

Of course, Ullmark has been the best as no other goaltender has allowed less than 2 goals per game.

Toronto Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs come into this game having gone 6-4 over their previous ten games, but on home soil, they have won 7 of their previous 8 outings.

That said, it’s going to be hard for them tonight as they are missing a lot of key players including star man Austin Matthews who is set to be out for at least three weeks with a knee injury.

Toronto is currently sitting in second place behind Boston in the Atlantic Division and trails the Bruins by 11 points as well as having played one game extra. It’s unlikely they will catch Boston by the end of the regular season, but as we know, anything can happen in sports and stranger things have happened.

The Maple Leafs have won four of the previous five games against the Bruins on home soil and both teams come into this one having had two days’ rest.

The Pick

Our computer is predicting a low-scoring affair here with a 3-2 win for the road team and we are very much looking at taking the Under 6 here. As we stated, the Bruins are the top defense in the league and Toronto is not bad themselves having allowed just the 4th least amount of goals in the NHL with just 2.63 per game.

The computer is very much opposing a trend here as the Bruins and Maple Leafs have seen 7+ goals scored in 50% of their previous ten meetings and a further three ended on six goals which would have been a push. Only two went under the 6.5 total.

With no Austin Matthews in the line-up, the Maple Leafs might struggle to generate some high-danger chances as well as the fact Boston is looking to end this 0-3 slump. They know the best way of beating Toronto is trying to keep the goalscoring to a minimum because the Maple Leafs does have a solid offense scoring 3.40 goals per game.

If the Under 6 goals doesn’t appeal to you, the Boston Bruins on the moneyline is available to bet at -120 in this Atlantic Division clash.

Final Score Prediction: Boston Bruins 3 – Toronto Maple Leafs 2

NHL Pick: Under 6 (-120) at Bet365
